Hi iam in liverpool and looking for a puppy for my babys birthday but jsut cany afford to pay out hundreds that i have seen being asked for i am running outta options now so i thought id try this please reply if you may be able to help thanks and hope to hear from you soon

Do you know what type of breed you would be looking for? I understand that the price is a consideration, however unless a rescue (where you need to have faith the rescue organisation really understands the dog and potentially its background - especially if there are children in the house) you are better off to go to a reputable breeder (please do your research), even if it does cost a bit more. The problem with some of the 'cheap' dogs you see on the advertising sites, is that they haven't had health tests, and while you might pay less in purchasing the dogs, you could end up paying so much more in medical bills and heartbreak. Reputable breeders have spent money doing full tests on their adults for inherited conditions, and then breed from those least likely to pass these on - therefore hoping to produce the healthiest puppies (of course there are never any guarantees). Part of the reason the price is higher is that they have put more money in than those who just breed out in the back shed and haven't tested or socialised their breeding dogs or pups.

Rescue is definitely something to consider. I always had purebreds back home in Canada until I moved over here. My first dog here (and my first dog as a 'married couple') was a rescued whippet-mix puppy that my husband and I fell in love with. She was the best thing that could have ever happened to us. We were lucky with her health and she lived till almost 15! But we did take out insurance (please try and do this if you can) so that when she did run into trouble (especially as we didn't know her background) we were able to afford treatment.

A lot of choosing a breed or size of dog will depend on the age of your children, how long you're gone each day, how much time you can devote to the dog. A dog who is from a 'working' type breed, or a breed bred for doing a job doesn't do well in a home where people work all day and then are running the kids round all evening to their activities, and the dog has to entertain itself - just one example. So when looking consider what the purpose of the original breed was for and how that might fit into your lifestyle.
