nigel, when i click on live chat,an oblong box comes up with a little square with a red cross in it.it says wait while downloading but nothing happens! I'm using windows xp,not sure which browser cos i'm a bit thick when it comes to anything technical.............will try & find out. Thanks
To use Live Chat your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape etc) needs to be able to run Java Applets and therefore needs to include the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). At various times Microsoft have included this in their browsers but also at various times they haven't - due to a dispute between them & Sun.
The original Windows XP release didn't include the JVM but Service Release SP1 did. I suspect you have got the original release of XP & hence no support for Java Applets. Your solution is to upgrade to XP SP1 (which you should probably do anyway) or to install just the Sun JVM.
The Service Release SP1a is available from Microsoft here (but it's a 100Mb+ download), the JVM download is available from Sun Microsystems here (15Mb download - follow link in top right hand corner).
To ensure best compatibility with Live Chat and the many other Java Applets available on the web the reccomendation is to use the Sun JVM.
Jax - sorry don't know about AOL software - talk to their support department and ask them how to enable JVM & run Java Applets.
Hi Jax, I have AOL ( 8 ) and can get in the chat room; so I doubt it's to do with that? It's more likely to be the software problem Nigel described
