Leaving Whippetrs During The Day

Hi

First post so please be gentle!

Wife and I are considerig acquiring two whippets for company but we both work full time. I was contemplating using a 6 ft x 5ft shed (with settee) and bolting on a 1.5 x 4.5 metre run behind it for them to use during the day.

Would this be acceptable? Not cruel? They are likely to be alone for up to 8 hours Monday to Friday.

hi and welcome , i kennel my dogs but are only left that long at night , you would probalby better to get 2 ex racing greys of the smaller size whom would be used to kennelling ? i would think there wouldnt be many breeders at all who would find this set up ok for their pups? is there no way you could go back at lunch time? then that would break their day up and also give them more time with you?

kennels are not cruel imo , quite a few on here also kennel but you must make proper time to interact with the dogs and stimulate them , my dogs love their kennels , well at 21 and 16 degrees who would blame them (w00t)

I do agree with Tanya :thumbsup: There's nothing wrong with kennels provided the dogs get enough time outside together with mental and physical exercise.

One of the problems with shutting them up all day is that it's all very well during the summer when we have lighter evenings for fun walks but what about the long dark winter nights?

I believe the maximum amount of time any dog should be left is four to five hours -so if you could arrange to return to give them a half hour break each day then it wouldn't be so bad

Also, whippets do love human company and you will never get the full benefit of being owned by a whippet (or two) if you are away all day

Hi there and welcome...I agree with all that has been said but I think it is too long for a dog to be left, to be honest, especially outside. Not only can it be cold in winter ...But it can be unbearably hot in a shed in summer.

Whippets love to be with you and they love to be at home with you. I wouldn`t have any of my dogs live outside in any circumstances at all. Dogs love human company and love to be part of the family too and they can`t be so if you are out at work all day while they are kennelled. Personally, I feel this would be very unfair to a dog.

I have five dogs , all living in the house, and I rescued my puppy Cassie at 16 weeks old as she was left all day in the house by herself as everyone was at work. When the weekend came they were too busy to see to the pup and the rest you can guess.

Sadly, this is what happens often and the result is dogs in rescue through no fault of their own .

Maybe two rescued Greyhounds who are used to kennels may fit the bill but even so, after racing and living in kennels for their racing life, they deserve a forever home inside with a family when they retire, I think.

I `m sorry to be negative as I`m sure you`d love your dogs and take great care of them but....I have to be honest and say what I think, when you have asked.
