Wonderful news received today that Layla's (Ch Aslan Sensationalism) dad picked up his final points for GRAND CHAMPION on the weekend. Will post a pic later - need to resize first.

Congrats to my friends Danny Smith and Rieky Veurman (co-owners) and Molly Rule-Steele (breeder) for this very special title for a very special dog.

looks good don't it?

All I have to hope for now is that Layla can follow in her Daddy's footsteps. :luck:

Does look great Lana :p What do you have to do to become a Grand Champion. I think they should have more of that sort of award over here, it may keep the Chs in the ring a bit longer. Most just get their three tickets then you never see them again.

In New Zealand to gain the title of Grand Champion the dog has to win 50cc's and get 3 all breed best in shows at championship shows under 3 different judges.

There are currently 7 grand champion whippets in New Zealand all NZ bred also..

NZ GR CH Woollahra Smooth Dude

NZ GR CH Woollahra T for Tartan

NZ GR CH Kana-ka Baileys Cream

NZ GR CH Bards Thighs and Whispers

NZ GR CH Ronndal Never Say Never

NZ GR CH Shenace Back at ya

NZ GR CH Ronndal Xciting Dream

And also well done to AUST GRAND CH Taegaan Read all about it. a job well done

for Grand Ch in Oz you have to get 1000 challenge points

Congrats to Danny and Reiky on Packer's title.

In Australia we need 1000 challenge points for a Grand Ch title. 100 will get you a ch title. Points are awarded to challenge winners t the rate of 5 points plus 1 point for each dog exhibited( less babies under 6 months). Only a maximum of 25 points can be received in one show. BOB winner also gets points for numbers entered of the opposite sex. ie 5 dogs = 10 points. 4 bitches= 9 points. Whichever goes BOB would collect 14 points in total. A best in Group win would take the total to 25.

Some very exceptional dogs will pick up a Gr Ch title at 2 or 3 yrs with lots of BIG or BIS awards. Like the Ch title in Aust, it can also be picked up with lots and lots of showing.

Not the greatest pic of Packer but the rest of us look alright! LOL

Packer is 5 years and 7mths old but he didn't start his show career until he was 10 mths old, so he's done it in 4 years and 9 mths. He is a Multi Best in Group and Best/Reserve in Show winner. We get fewer shows per year here in Central Queensland than they do in the Metropolitan areas. So I think it's a well deserved title.

No doubt about it Lana- Packer deserves his title.

My reservation is about the title itself.

I'm not sure that one striving for 1000 points actually does anything positive for the breed- especially perhaps in metropolitan areas. I have heaps of friends( not whippet lovers- more the RR folk) asking if I'm after a Gr Ch title with Gabby- the answer is a big no. She could go out weekend after weekend and pick up maybe 4 challenges out of 5(her current rate) but in the process cruel the breed for everyone else for a couple of years. What does that prove? She was shown at Toowoomba Royal on 25 March and her next show is on 30 April.

If she never gets to a 1000 does that mean that a much shown Gr Ch is any more deserving of merit?

My comments are general ones only- and go across all breeds. Absolutely no offence is meant towards Packer or his owners.

IMHO. I was worried about Gr. Ch. when it first started. It brought OLD dogs back into the ring for that last CC. ( Even if a dog had well 1000pts. it still had to win a CC after it started)

Old out of coat dogs were draged around for the last CC. It was heart breaking to see who would do this.

I have never tried till now to do it. We do very little shows to some. Only about 2 a month & at times not show for months. I have a bitch on 850 & is 5 years old. She has done so much for us that I would love to think she will do it. BUT when the time comes to retire, that will be it. With Gr Ch or not.

Some whippets have been shown here at 12 years of age. Far too old. If in 12 years you can not breed or buy something better then you are doing a lot wrong.

Packer look like a dog well deserving of the title & well done.

The trouble is, Karen, at £20.00+ an entry, what is the point in taking a Champion out, especially if you have other dogs to show. Unfortunately, I haven't got a money tree so I shall show Ronan occasionally when I think the judge might really like him but nothing is gained from winning CC upon CC or from a champion getting placed down the line or thrown out. IMO CC record holders only get that because of the 'sheep syndrome' when a lot of judges are 'scared' to put another dog over them, not because they are much better than the rest of the competition, but because they want to take the easy option.

really disagree with you here Cartman

I`m still showing Mayzee , she 12 in May and she loves it ! Ask Karen or Dessie ,

Sometimes peps say to me that she`d go round the ring on her own !!

She only goes to `club `shows and maybe the odd ( just 1 in 2003 which she won Best vet,) General Champ shows. Unless there is a local show and i`m taking the pup as well ,

Think how a dog must feel after going out to shows with mum or dad most weekends to suddenly being left at home :(

If a dog dosnt enjoy it then fair enogh (Mayzees mum hated showing!)but if they are fit ,still look good ( I think Mayzee does) and enjoy it then why not .

Ive had more than 1 judge say that Mayzee moves better than alot of the younger dogs . :D

:huggles:

On the other subject I hope we never get Grand Ch , here .

Some peps never know when to take a Champ out the ring ,

It only carries on winning on the past success at times and how many dogs that should have gained their titles were stopped through peps being greedy .

A Champion is a Champion wether it has 3 C C`s or 33 C C`s

I think we should have Champion classes though and then they could compete for B O B :D

Yes, I see no problem in showing a Veteran as long as they enjoy it and are fit enough. There was no stopping my Dessie when she was 10 & 11 years old but I had to retire her, much to her disgust, when her eartips had to be removed.

Jax, my thoughts are much the same as yours on showing Champions, as I have already posted.

JAX.

Yes your dog may be shown well at that age. However, I did miss stating the point. That is a breeder who has 3-4 litters a year & can only manage to bring out a 12 year old. Not just at Club shows or a few times a year, but every weekend, remember our temps. here.

Also a dog that is showing age. Lumps on the sides, coat loss etc. A dog that "in it's day" was a great winner. But then not placed.........To me this is a sad end to an aminal that gave so much.

My point is not made to ALL veterans. Just some that time has come to. Here we do not have a Veteran class at All Breed Champ shows. So the "oldies" are shown in either Aust Breed or Open.

Get your drift Cartman :p

I too hate to see a dog `passed its best` as if its been a big winner in its day `new pep`s to the breed will only remember it as THEY have seen it .

Mayzee is still waiting to `have her day` !!

no , only joking , she did win 2 R cc`s and did plenty of winning for me . and as I only breed the occaisional litter (6 in over 20years !)

I like to enjoy my dogs if they can still represent me well in the ring.

 found out at last . ;)

Please don` tell anyone ! :))

We have veteran sweepstakes here sometimes, on right at the start of the show, and those oldies don't have to compete for the challenges.

However I agree about the oldies being dragged around week in week out to get those Gr CH points. Not fair if they are obviously past it or don't like it. Chelsea is only 7 and used to LOVE showing but now I can't get to her to come with me willingly. She would MUCH rather stay on the couch. I took her out to a veteran class a few weeks ago - after a very long break from showing - and she was SO naughty it was embarrassing. She was worse than a puppy and it was a shame to see a bitch who used to love it so much to put on a turn like that. So it is really over for her now.

Gary - no offence taken. I just put on the details about Packer's career so that other people here wouldn't think he was a "petrol champion". ;)

Dont have time to trawl back to quote Dessie or Jax but.

I would hate to see the Ch dragged out week after week but as Jax said a Ch class would be great and then perhaps challenge for BOB. I am not really keen on any points things, if they get them they do but sometimes its abused with the poor dog being over shown just for the last few.

I would just like people to see more Ch like we used to.
