MAFF has recently carried out a 'formal risk assesment' looking at the risks of spreading F&M.

The MAFF website says "A formal risk assessment has now been carried out which shows that there is no veterinary justification for closing all footpaths and preventing all public access to land. A more measured response is recommended which takes account of the real risk.

The relevant page is http://www.maff.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/fm...est/country.htm.

Following this assesment MAFF have issued local authorities with recommendations to open land and footpaths which are more than 3km from infected premises. There are certain precautions that should be observed e.g. if you work or keep susceptable animals you should keep away, you should not walk amongst livestock and not walk dogs if livestock is about (cows in particular are curious and likely to approach). Have a look at the MAFF website for full details.

Anyway, that's certainly good news and I'm sure it will help pedigree racing getting back to normal that much quicker.
