Asking for opinions on giving dogs krill. Pros and cons if possible

.

Krill are the foundation of much of the ocean's food-web; dogs have plenty of alternate sources of protein, while whales, many species of fish, whale-sharks, etc, do not. For them, the loss of krill = starvation.

Tiny Krill: GIants in the Ocean Marine Life Food Chain

Japanese fishermen planned to expand their Antarctic fleet & take krill by the tonne, not to feed humans, but to feed to CHICKENS for later slaughter; this is nutz. Just b/c krill is "cheap" protein is no excuse for feeding millions of land-birds from the very base of the marine food-web!
Chickens can do very nicely on an omnivore diet, with grain & grass & invertebrates in a pasture-rearing system; total confinement & feeding them dried krill from a hopper is extremely stressful, & highly unnatural, to boot.

Thank you for explaining it. I probably won't feed it. I did wonder because years ago we used to feed our marine fish on it.
A dog owner today says she gives it her dog daily.

We feed our chickens on grain, sunflower seeds and mealworms. They also enjoy any of my garden plants they can get their greedy beaks. We don't eat the chickens but we do eat their eggs.

Yup- everything from penguins to whales will disappear when we've hoovered up all the krill. My local supermarket sells the odd herring or sardine half-price when it starts to feel its age - I compromise with that but really they're rare treats not necessities.

QUOTE from the link I posted, above -

"Despite its importance to marine ecosystems, some krill populations are exploited by humans, primarily as livestock- & farmed salmon-feed. Antarctic populations are heavily harvested.
But off North America’s west coast, recognizing its importance in maintaining ecosystem integrity, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council voted in March 2006 to prohibit commercial krill fishing in federal waters off California, Oregon, and Washington."
