Four weeks ago my 10 year old Whippet went downhill (sleeping alot,no energy,no interest in food) very fast but I put it down to the fact that we were moving house and he is very sensitive to change. I took him to the vet where he stayed for a few nights on a drip. When he came home he had loads of tablets but because I couldn't get him to eat ANYTHING I couldn't get the tablets down him.He looked permanantley drugged with no energy so I stopped them and within 24 hours he was back to normal wanting to be walked and eating like a horse. He started on Hill's KD diet 2 days ago but last night I was up with him 4 times with the runs and trying to be sick (he did eventually).I don't know what I am supposed to do?Will he be in pain? How long is he likely to live for?

Oh dear, what a worry for you. I can't answer your questions from personal experience but suggest you join the kidney failure support group http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/K9KIDNEYS/ where there are people who do have experience, waiting to help. Goodluck to you both,

I am taking him to the vet at 4.30 to have his bloods checked.

When you get the results, make sure you ask for a copy. (It's yours - you paid for it). If you join a support group which I really recomend, they will probably ask what they are.

I'm really sorry that your whippet has been diagnosed with kidney failure. Our whippet, Josh, had the same and he was only 10 as well. I seem to remember joining the above group which was really helpful. I think survival times depends a lot on how advanced the illness was when he was diagnosed. Josh was in advanced kidney failure when he was diagnosed and hadn't been right for a while - off his food and drinking a lot. Just wish I'd realised what was happening but he was our first dog and I wasn't on here to ask for advice either! Our vets at the time suggested it was his teeth and he even had a dental - we were never even offered a pre-op blood test which would have discovered the disease 4 months earlier. :(

With help from the above forum and another site I found (can't remember it at the moment) Josh lasted for nearly 6 months which I think amazed the vets! As I said, his disease was in the advanced stage - I hope your whippet's is at an earlier stage which hopefully will give you longer with him.

We used to give him his tablets in fish sticks or in a piece of cheese. Putting gravy on his food helped too. Green tripe is supposed to be good but very smelly! Josh wouldn't eat the Hill's diet either. If you join the support group they will have lots of foods to recommend which would be more palatable. Low protein foods which are also low in phosphorous are recommended.

I hope you can find something he likes to eat and I hope you manage to have many more happy months together. :huggles:

Well.................all of cloud's readings were normal so I am very confused as he had been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure 4 weeks ago at the other vets and has only been on Hill's renal for a few days! The bill was up to £700.00 but that is not the point.I would just like to know whether he has it or not!

That's very strange but good if he doesn't have kidney failure after all! I don't know much about any other reason why his kidney levels could have been raised but maybe someone else has some ideas. Unless he's only in the early stages of kidney failure and they were only mildly up and the diet has brought them down? The drip he was on would have helped to bring them down too. £700 sounds rather a lot - I don't think any of our bills came up to that much!

Was that £700 for a referral clinic? And did you get a copy of the test results? Still recommend you join the kidney group for help. How is Cloud today? It is really a mistake to think you can leave this sort of things to a vet - I ended up with a bill for £3000 because my normally good vet failed to diagnose (or rather, listen to my description of what I thought was wrong) something he hadn't seen before and we ended up with an emergency referral when it was almost too late. Correct dx would have just meant some antibiotics. A friend was told her whippet's blood was normal when in fact the platelets were fatally low. Please don't let this rest - as Gilliwig says, the earlier you catch kidney problems (or anything else), the better.

Cloud was at my usual vet hospital for treatment. They x-rayed his kidneys etc.

He has been up with the runs and sickness again all night.I'm starting to think it is the Hill's food as it isn't even digested when I fed him at 5.30 and he threw up between 1.30am-8am.

I don't believe he was on the new diet long enough for it to make his blood results normal,he had only had 3 meals of it in all.

All in all he is bright, enjoying walks and eating well.

He is insured with £75 excess and 25% of bill to be paid by myself.

I am wondering whether to complain about the vets who diagnosed Cloud with chronic kidney failure.I don't think he has it at all.He has never been back to the vets since it was diagnosed in August apart from to have his bloods checked (which were great) and he is as fit as a fiddle for a 10 year old.He has been on a normal diet since and I am really peeved about the amount of money that I got charged at the vets and for the renal food, never mind how upset I was when he was diagnosed and thought I wouldn't have long left with him!

What does everyone think and how do you go about complaining?I no longer live in the area where the vets I used are.
