Jumping up collie!

My collie gets very excited when he sees people on our walks, to the point he runs to them...then jumps up. I have been told he is going to be a large collie and at 4.5 months he is already a good size. The problem is he jumps up at people and they fuss him which reinforces his thought that if I jump I will get attention. When it comes to other dogs he spends most the time on his back!! I really don't want to put him on a lead for walks as he needs the exercise. Any tips? Thanks

Sounds a lot like my collie when she was young. You could maybe try a message jacket like: http://www.amazon.co.uk/TRAINING-JACKET-WITH-Personalised-logo/dp/B004XWBN16? I would probably keep him on the lead until he had learnt "manners" so to speak, introduce him to people when he has "four paws on the floor" and if you feel you can ask them to ignore him/not fuss him until he's either standing or sitting calmly. If you do put him back on the lead until he's happy to meet people from the ground, at least it will probably be temporary, rather than a permanent solution to a deeply ingrained problem!

Why does he "need the exercise"? He is far too young to be running madly about all over the place. The guideline is 5 minutes per month of age and it sounds like you might be exceeding this. He will not regulate himself - he won't know when he is tired.

Take the opportunity to train him while he is young - brain work is just as tiring and not damaging on tender young joints.

He has two 30 minute may be less walks a day, I don't think he is over doing it, just needs to learn manners! Thanks for your advice I do ask people to ignore him etc until he calms. Thanks for the advice
