Italian Prices

Hi, without turning this post into a slanging match or fight can someone explain why Italian Greyhound puppies are so expensive. :cheers:

I have no idea how much an Italian Greyhound would be to buy, so what is 'expensive'?

 

I bought Meg (a pedigree Whippet) Vaccinated and with a written 5 generations pedigree for £250. She's just the the best dog and I couldn't wish for anything better :huggles: I've seen other Whippets for much, much more.......... So maybe it's just down to the breeder and how much they feel the pups are worth :blink: and what people are prepared to pay for a fairly uncommon dog.

 

Do prices of Italian Greyhounds vary as much as other dogs or is there an average price?

there is only 1 factor that commands such high prices and that is greed.

A fair price imo for an IG puppy is roughly around the £500 mark.

£1000+ prices are completely unjustified.

Thanks for your reply its only that I'm on the lists of two people that are breeding in the future and both want around the £500 mark. I was just wondering if the puppies that were more than double in price were anything special or if they were from a certain line or something. Thanks again for your honest answer. You're the first to explain this out of over 100 people that have viewed this post !!! :cheers:

Hi yes I've asked her but she thinks it may be better to ask people that have bred them before . Also she has no intention of breeding in the future. I think shes more into showing them at the moment. Ta :thumbsup:

I've never looked into buying an IG pup in the UK but the ones my family have bought in Australia were from mega mega show champions and a fraction of that price. My parents paid $700 each for their current pups in February which is about £280. Doesn't really help but thought I would post for interest's sake. They are utterly butterly gorgeous too :wub: :wub:

Some breeds are more expensive than others too and its not always obvious why. Pedigree racing whippets are generally cheaper than show ones and it doesn't seem to matter whether its out of champions or club dogs. Thats just the way it is. I think maybe racing ones more often go to people who are racing and therefore the breeder knows them so perhaps that has kept the price lower.

Don't know about IGs but I hope your right and this doesn't turn into a slanging match.

it was my intention to breed as i explained on the phone , but i have a few things i certainly want to be 100% on before i do, if ever go ahead? i feel im sound and experienced enough for whippets , only ever having spent most my life with them (w00t) but with only almost 3 yrs with igs and limited help and advice it will take much longer to maybe acheive what i wish to acheive :thumbsup:

it is often (although not exclusively) the case that puppies being advertised for £1000+ are not being sold by reputable breeders, who have a proven track record - they are actually seldom from top winning stock or CH parents and in many cases are from a completely random mating that has been picked for convenience rather than any particular aim. It is perfectly possible for the right person to get a IG puppy from top quality lines for a reasonable price.

Thanks for asking this Wiggy - I've wondered the same - I love Italian Greyhounds but have only looked at ads for them on the internet and they all seem to be a £1000 plus - it's good to know that they can be less expensive but well bred and reared...not that I'm in the position to have one...but I can dream :- "

totally agree, its horrible when you see things like 'unusual' and 'rare colours' just to bump up the price even more!

Sidney has 3 gen ped and cost 400 (whippet) before we got Ben, Ian looked at IG's and the prices we saw were anything from 1K to 1.5K

Reputable IG breeders charge around £450 for a puppy!

Less than reputable one's considerably more & unfortunately so do those advertising IGX puppies :angry:
