Hi,

I have just been shopping, armed with my own carrier bags, and in every shop i have been asked"Do you need a bag"?It is driving me round the bend.If i do need a bag,i will ask for one.My local charity shop has stopped stocking carrier bags, only thier own posh bags for £3.99???A little old lady had bought some books and had nothing to carry them in.The assistant in the shop went to get one out of her locker, but told the old lady not to say anything, other wise she would get into trouble.Has the world gone mad.?I am all for using your own bags, but please, enough,a humble carrier is sometimes necessary.

Yes its really getting on my nerves too!!! I like to bring my own bags but if I forget and need to take a bag I don't want to be made out to be some eco - unfriendly criminal

What annoys me more is the stupid bloke at our local shop who puts everything in a bag without asking you, even small things like a bar of chocolate! I always say that I don't want a bag but he just says 'oh well, I've put it in now' so I just tip it out and give him the bag back  I think it annoys him!

ive just been in woolies and had to pay for a carier bag, i think its a good idea.................and i have heard that tescos are going to stop doing them as well

I'm glad supermarkets don't make plastic bags as easily accessable as before, where you just reached across and tore one from the hook, or the assistants just loaded your shopping into a plastic bag whether you wanted one or not. I had to stop them putting my shopping into plastic bags at the till in The Co-op.

So I don't mind them asking me, as I rarely want one anyway, but if I ever did, it would save me asking

They banned free plastic bags years ago in German supermarkets. You get issued free brown paper bags (very strong) or you pay for a plastic bag. This country is way behind as usual :- "

Sorry....one of my favourite soapbox rants...... (w00t)

But they make you feel so bad when you say that yes you actually do want one - or perhaps thats just me

I've bought loads of those 'special' reuseable ones as I don't like using loads of bags but I always forget to take them with me :b

I've got lots of reusable ones too, but I keep leaving them in the car or at home

I'm also fed up with the persistent "do you need any help with your packing?" - even when it's only a pint of milk (w00t) I know the cashiers have a duty to ask (apparently "mystery shoppers" check up on them) but the larger chains need to change the tune occasionally

So far as banning plastic carriers is concerned, I reuse mine anyway - mainly as bin liners - which saves me buying more plastic bags!!! I would also like to see the amount of plastic used for food packaging reduced! After all, what's the point of doing away with carriers if all the stuff you put inside your enviromentally friendly bags is wrapped in copious amounts of plastic? :- "

A viewpoint from the other side of the counter, so to speak.

Lots of customers now say 'It's ok, I don't need a bag'

I have a crafty look to see if customers have a bag then make a judgement

If in doubt I give a bag, if possible a paper one, then if the customer does not want one they will say so.

I don't mind, I have to buy the bags so if cutomers do not want one I'll save a bit of money or if they do it's budgeted anyway.

I don't ask if customers want a bag, for some reason it just sound a bit mean.

Up to now we have always had special Christmas bags but I'm not going to do them this year.

Went to a supermarket yesterday, didn't need a trolley, OH took a basket and I took one too, filled them up with what we needed (OH got the heavy stuff of course  ) then at checkout were told, "We can't allow you to take baskets out of the store"

Well I said, "How do you expect me to get my shopping out to my car ?"

Of course she seemed to think the obvious answer is, "Well that's why we SELL plastic bags !"

Excuse me !!! But I thought the whole idea was to do away with plastic bags not guilt trip people into feeling like a criminal insinuating they are going to STEAL the shopping basket just so they will pay for plastic bags. I think some stores see this new "green" idea as nothing more than a money making enterprise.

I left my shopping at the checkout, walked across the other side of the car park where they'd left the trolleys, fetched one in, dumped my shopping in it and then took it to the car. Had a mind, for sarcasm's sake to take their precious trolley as well (w00t) .

You do what i do,use them as bin liners. If i don,t use the carrier bags,i buy bin liners, also, the supermarkets are coining in.I used to work at a well known supermarket, and i know how much carrier bags cost them.It would be nice to have a few pence knocked off your shopping for bringing your own bags.I am totally for re-using bags, its more the fact that ou keep being asked. If i need one,i will ask.

Hi Jenny,

Interesting to see it from the other side. What you do sounds better.I usually have my Rescue Greyhound tote bag, open and ready, and they still ask if i want a bag.Its as if the shop assistants go into automatic pilot.Like going into Superdrug and being asked"any mobile top up or postage stamps today"?lol

Ha!!I think a few of us feel the same.I also feel the poor assistants are constantly told to ask.Not so long ago,i went to Tesco.I only nipped, and on this occasion, forgot my bag.The till operator said"do you have a bag"?when i said no,she said"why not?you should be ashamed of yourself"!! When i looked unamused, she said sorry, only joking. There will be bag police soon, with on the spot fines

In the supermarkets here they prettymuch never ask if you need a bag. We have had to pay for plastic bags for a long time so now prettymuch everybody brings their own bags. :)

Lets hope the novelty wears off here too..I would,nt mind paying for a bag,.

I've just come back from the Co-op - I went in with my husband because I just needed a few items. I was very good and took my nice royal blue canvas bag from our local butchers with me, did my shopping, got to the checkout and realised I'd left it in the car! So I had to use a plastic bag in the end anyway. I'm getting better though - I have now remembered twice in recent weeks to take my own bags to Tesco's and got my green points for using them!

I think it would be better if they banned free bags outright - I'd soon remember to take my own if I had to pay for ones I used - I think it's the only way you end up remembering.

My local authority require that our tins and plastic bottles are put into plastic bags to stop them contaminating the newspapers (they go into the same blue bin for collection) so I need the plastic bags from my shopping to dispose of tins/bottles. Therefore it annoys me no end if I am made to feel guilty for wanting my shopping in plastic bags. I have said in some shops that if they stop giving me free plastic bags I will shop elsewhere. I feel that the consumer is being made to feel guilty. When they stop using so much unnecessary packaging on products I may change my mind - not before.

Im guilty too of using them.....but they are a pet hate of mine...wish they had never been invented. rant over...

must admit I do send them back to the supermarket when Ive used them, or use them as poo bags...but I could live without them Im sure and a lot of the other packaging on food too...

I have purchased the large green reusable bags but can I remember to put them in the car NO NO>>>
