Irish Wolfhound
The Irish wolfhound was originally used in war and it’s job was to pull men down from their horses or chariots. They were also used for hunting elk, boar and wolves and that is where wolfhound took it’s name. Prized for their bravery in battle, ownership was only permitted to kings and nobles. The higher the prestige the more wolfhounds you were allowed to own!
Life Span: 6-8 years
Height: males 71-90cm and females 71-90cm
Weight: males 40-69kg and females 40-69kg
The Irish wolfhound is a gentle giant that enjoys the company of it’s family. Although they are large in size they do not make good guard dogs and prefer to be gracious towards humans and other dogs. The desire to chase is strong so they may not do well off the lead when there are lots of small animals around! Especially a cheeky squirrel!
Health Checks
If you intend to buy a puppy you must find a good breeder who can show you health clearances from BOTH of the puppies parents.
The health checks are:
Hip Dysplacia - This is an abnormality of the hip joint. Breed mean score 5.5 (parents should be lower)
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) - This is a degenerative eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye
Elbow Dysplasia - (ideally O:O)

Anaesthesia Sensitivity - Sighthounds, including Irish Wolfhounds, are sensitive to anaesthesia and some other drugs that can lead to the death of the dog if it is administered a regular dose.
