what is the difference in "Ped" and "non-ped" racing?

I'm in the states - just curious

Hi Dwight, "non peds" are whippets that have greyhound in them and not recognised by the Kennel Club. They are normally faster than our pure bred whippets.

Further they both have pedigrees. I don't know why the term non-ped came to be in common usage, which it is. Racing whippets (non kc reg ones) are the original racing whippets they pre date the Kennel Club.

There are also a lot of differences in the way that the dogs are raced. Peds are loaded into the traps from the back as we don't use kickboards. We always race dogs and bitches against each other. Peds don't run for money and generally run consolation races and give trophies for cons dogs.

There are 4 main racing associations in the USA - Whippet Racing Association (WRA) - North American Whippet Racing Association (NAWRA)

and Contintental Whippet Association (CWA) - the final one is National Oval Track racing association - the streight races are all from 150 to 200

yards long - Ovals are usually from 320 to 400 yards

then there are several other regional assoc that have different rules - (like weight graded British

rules racing) etc - all race males & females against each other - all the dogs are loaded in boxes (traps if you prefer) from the rear -

all but one sprint racing assoc allow any AKC registered dog that meets the AKC registration and breed standards (breed disqualifications apply

such as oversized) - CWA racers have their own registration that does not allow one line of dogs in the pedigree - among WRA fans

CWA racers are commonly called "show dog racing" - be that as it may be the CWA nationals were held last weekend and drew 70 dogs

racing on the first day and 40 the second day and featured some of the hottest running dogs in the nation - we race for CH points and ribbons -

each dog runs 4 programs races with in up to 6 dogs per race - the races are not timed but when someone does time them they are running

the 200 yards from the hi 9 sec to mid 12 sec times - the dogs run in "graded racing" based on historical meet points - they can move up or down

based on performance in the day and history - in the picture above the dog on the left is one of our breeding - he finished 2nd in this race and

runs in the B grade - For the meet on Sat he finished the day 16th out of 70 running finished just out of the points -

Sunday he finished 12th out of 40 and picked up the bottom CH point by running 1st, 4th,2nd and 2nd for the day -

Hi i was amazed to read the times for 200 yd races " from hi 9 sec to mid 12 sec " that is unbelievable for a pedigree whippet over here is low 9 sec to high 9 sec for 150 yds.

there are differences in USA & UK whippets - in particular size - two of our males are 22+ inches but under 22.5 so they are within the standard -

one weighted in at 48 lbs and the other is 54 lbs both in running weight - Mango is the smallest male we have ever bred - 21 1/2 " and 35 lbs -

neither Thunder nor Payton have raced yet - we shall see how that goes in a coupla weeks - size does matter in speed - more muscle , more speed -
