Please don't go to this site if you aren't into hunting. There's a lot of photos.

Hunting Boar in Aus

One of the breeds that they put into boar hunting dogs in NZ I've been told are whippets.

This guy uses compost heaps as well as other breeds. Interesting that he's using RR's and a deerhound working together. Also IW's x greyhounds.

ummm not my cup of tea, I think allo the chest/neck armure for sale shows how risky it is for the dogs.

each to their own.

Interesting website. :)

Just as a matter of curiousity, how did you find it ?

Yes that is true alot of pig hunters are crossing ther dogs with whippets (in NZ) just a couple of weeks ago in the newspaper there were some pig dog x Whippets for sale. They are wanting to produce a smaller faster pig hunting dog.

I found the link from a deerhound list that I'm on Scott.

Mark - The owner of the deerhounds and site (I think) has been hunting feral pigs for 17 years and he's never had a dog killed or seriously injured. Apparently feral pigs are one of the least dangerous animals that they hunt with dogs.

Kenneth Cassels book A Most Perfect Creature of Heaven describes his experiences travelling the world and hunting different game with deerhounds. Even if you don't hunt with your dogs it's a wonderful read. A book of passion written with love. Anyway he hunted different 'roos' also emu's with deerhounds. Some of the dogs that he judged in Aus were also used for hunting.

Got carried away there  They can only use two dogs as the meat is sold for export and there can't be tooth marks anywhere else on the carcass aprt from the ears. They also lamp 'em.

When hunting in the daytime they use a scent hound (RR?) to flush and the deerhound to catch. Apparently through 'natural selection' these pigs are getting faster to now they need the sighthound blood. Hence the 'lurchers' being used. Boar Arab's etc.

Well I find it interesting anyway. :- "
