I'm interested in showing my Whippets but don't really know where to start. I'm looking at showing them for fun in the little shows to start with, I've heard something about companion shows but you need to register with the KC club to do this do you know if this is free and worth while?

Any advice would be helpful.

thanks Whip (we are from Wiltshire) :D

I'm sure you are going to get lots of help with this question.... - it might be worth picking up a copy of 'Our Dogs' or 'Dog World' (both weekly dog newspapers) from your newsagent - up-coming shows are listed at the back.

If there's something nearby, even though you haven't entered, it might be worth going along to watch what happens.....

with companion shows you get 4 pedigree classes for pedigree dogs(dont have to be kc reg) then best in show out of the first four winners.then the noverty classes eg crossbred, best condition, best rescue, prettiest bitch etc, then you get best novelty all the first winners of novelty.pedigree and crossbreds can enter.no challenge or reserve challenge certificates and junior warrant are not eligle to enter pedigree classes.hope you find this useful.

Just emailed you to say there is a Salisbury Canine Society (you did say you were from round there?) - we've had interclub matches with them. Don't have details, but someone else might.

I'll try to get some more info if I can.

thanks Wendy that would be great as we are from Salisbury. :D

I have just had the schedule for the Salisbury & S Wilts Open show on 30th August at Salisbury Leisure Centre. Whippets will be in the ring from about 12 - I should be going - I think!

The secretary is Alan Wood, phone number 01980 671265 - if you are interested in going to their ringcraft, I haven't a clue where it is though as I don't live that close.

How old are your whippets? I presume they are KC registered, Companion shows are a really good place to start but I would go and watch a few open or champ shows to help you understand about handling and showing in general, also you'll get to meet lots of whippy enthusiasts - which can only be a good thing! :p

Thanks everyone

Joe my two Whips at present are not KC registered ones just over a year old and the other is two in a couple of months. We were not interested in getting them registered when we got them as they were only for pets. It looks like we are going to have to fork out a bit of cash to register them now, never mind. We also will be getting our new pup on Saturday who will be registered so we can stat showing him in puppy classes when he's old enough.

I think we will go to the Salisbury and S Wilts show

If you ring the number Joe gave you they should be able to give you full details of the Club and the ringcraft nights, times and venue.

I've just heard that you cannot show your dogs if they have been spayed / neutered as its altering the animal, please could some one let me know if this is true.

Also is this the case for Agility / Racing as well ?

thanks

Hi Whip

Yes this is true unless you have specific permission from the kennel club.

thanks

I've just heard that the rules have changed and you can now show dogs that have been spayed / neutered.

Please couold you let me know if this is the case for both Bitches and Dogs.

:D

:D Hi Whip,

Yes you can show altered dogs but you still have to let the KC know before showing them.

Of course with bitches it easier as the judge will have no idea but with dogs the judge will still take it as a fault as the standard calls for a male to have two !
