Hi all :) ,

Im new to this site, it was recommended to me whilst out walking my dog last night. We have a 2 yr old Lurcher, who we've been told is a whippet x greyhound, and she loves to run. We are interested in finding out about the non-pedigree racing and where the next race is nearest to us (Berkshire) as we would like to come with the dog and watch and possibly get involved if the dog seems happy to do so.

I would be grateful for any information.

Thanks

Lorraine

Nearest to you is probably the Fordingbridge club in the New Forest. Hants/Dorset borders, or Thurrock (?)....

There is a big Whippet racing meeting on the 23 ,24 and I think 25 of this month at the amature sports club ,Asfordby near Melton Mowbray. Its a real big meeting ,a Championships I believe .Dogs one day ,bitches the next.I show my Whippets but I was at a show their last Sunday and they had Whippet racing on then and we got talking to a guy with racing Whippets who mentioned this meeting .From what he was saying I dont think they are all pedigree cos he said they did the racing on weight and one of the best dogs weighs in at 72 lbs!!! This has got to be a cross as I used to race Greyhouds (gave it up cos I couldn`t beat them!! Joke)and one of my dogs weighed 74 lbs .Hope this is of use to you. don`t know where you can get any info ,if you would like directions let me know :D

WHIPPETS RULE OK !!!!

:D HI LORRAINE, non pedigree whippets do run as weighed. They race in weight groups eg 16-18lb 20-22lb etc, in the championships. We also run scratch races which means dogs and bitches over 35lb run in their weight classes--- 36lb, 40lb and a class called no limit. No limit means any weight over 40lb. We run on straights which is 150yds, 160yds and 175yds, also we have a bend season at the end and begining of the year. We race at clubs up and down the country so its fair on everyone. Hope this all makes sense. Try emailing chris cornish who runs the whippet news and she would be able to help you with any info you require ;) her email is christinecornish@hotmail.com. :D
