Misty has had a cracked large back tooth for a few years, never causing her any problems until lately when it started to rot and get infections.

After an X-ray, the vet decided it needed to come out.

The total bill including X-rays, drugs, Sedation and a General anesthetic came to £481

I get a bulk discount with having 4 whippets. My vets are expensive, I know that, but they are excellent and with a 20% discount I decided to stay with them. I got £84 off. I still think that £397 seems a heck of a price.

I do not begrudge spending the money on Misty, but I am concerned that she could have had quality care at the other local vets for less.

Does anyone have comparitive prices in their area?

Wow! That does seem expensive. I've had cats have teeth out and it cost nothing like that - can't remember how much now but it was a lot more reasonable.

Havent had a dog with bad teeth, but last year my elderly siamese cat had several teeth removed and the rest cleaned. The bill was £129, including antibiotics, etc- no x ray, but that is still a huge difference!!!

Sox had to have stitches recently, here is a breakdown of the charges ..........

It is highly likely that the surgical time was longer for a back tooth removal as that sort of op can take a while due to the complexity but I must say your charge does sound on the high side :blink:

my mums cat had 4 back teeth out, which cost her £160

dont think they did xrays or anything just straight forward knocked out and teeth pulled, :b

it does seem really expensive to me, that why im pleased my 3 are insured

Out of hours fee £76.66 (would have been £140.00 AFTER 11pm)

Euthanasia £54.96

Cremation £65.95

That is actually not too bad ( as regards fees ) When Peat had to be PTS It cost £200 excluding the painkillers etc they used trying to save him. That was during consulting hours.

I have just checked with the other very repuitable local vets. It soulds like it would have cost £250 at the absolute max.

My vets have made a huge profit from me once too often (even with my 20% discount ). They may have all the latest state of the art technology but I am disgusted that the cost of paying for it should be heaped on the clients. Our Royal Dick Vet school charges similar rates but they are probably the best in the UK and are a teaching hospital.

The costs are adding insult to injury and it's so hard to deal with at the time even tho' I know they have to charge

One of the practices I use doesn't charge for the actual euthanasia itself, but they do charge for Somulose.

My main practice only charges £26.04 for a call out, so £32.70 for a consultation on their own premises sounds a tad dear (w00t)

I don't know how much it is to have teeth about but I think cleaning is about £150 at our practice. When Ti had his foot stitched a couple of years ago it was about £00 all up - about £150 for the initial sedative, stitching, bandaging and overnight care, the rest was follow up visits.

When Max died in November, I think the bill was about £150 - about £15 consultation, £25 for anaesthetic or whatever it is and the rest was cremation - but we only pay for deaths when we next go in, never at the time.

I had my dog cremated five years ago ( coincedently today is the anniversary ) and the bill just for cremation was almost 120 pounds, I didnt question it as I was in too much of a state, but its made me think about my vets costs

My vets would be around the same price but, like you, I trust them implicitly. Against all the odds, they saved Tilly's life three years ago and a vet hospital who saw her xrays said they did an amazing job and by rights she shouldn't have made it. I know pulling a tooth is a relatively simple procedure in comparison but, just in case anything major happens, I need to know that my vets are one of the best. I still believe there is an element of 'you get what you pay for'.

Be careful, I know many of the pet insurers don't cover dental work, neither preventative or accidental.

Misty is not insured and never has been. She is now 11. By the time a dog reaches 10 years old, they add so many exclusions (including teeth and a host of other things), that it is not worth the cost. Misty has been healthy since she was adopted at 3 years old, I cannot begrudge her this expense in her vintage years. She now has sparkling gnashers to see her into a ripe old age

I have however decided to change vets. After 17 years of a great working realtionship, it is a really hard decision to make. ther are however several excellent local vets for me to choose from and it is just a case of building up a good working relationship from scratch.

I was shocked when I got the bill for a C Section! Hubby has told me to take the Whippets out of that particular practice and go to his Greyhound vet.

One of our Greyhounds had a toe amputated, aftercare and booster injection for only £120! It's a very small practice and only one vet but I suppose there's no overheads as such. My vets is a big state of the art animal hospital, hence why I seem to pay over the odds.

Nobody minds paying a fair price but nobody likes being ripped off :angry:

My own vet retired recently and his prices were fair .

The practice has been taken over and immediately the prices rocketed .

A lot of clients are not happy :angry:

That seems a lot. As far as the anaesthetic I think it depends on the weight of the dog, as to how much they charge for that. Well that's what I got told when I got Megan's scale and polish back in October :unsure:

I think you were overcharged and personally would question why you were charged call out plus consult since you wouldn't have a call out without a consultation, to me that is charging twice for the same thing...all the vets around here charge call out but do not add consult on top.

I must confess though when Parker was pts it cost me £15 including cremation/consult ...and when Woody was pts it was £20 for everything....there are advantages to having friends who are vets....but I do think you should speak to your surgery about why they are charging you a call out and a consult since they wouldn't come out and then not look at your dog.. certain vets count on people being too upset to query the bill.
