How Big Is Your Whippet?

Is it true that whippets are getting bigger?

Echo is almost 22" to the shoulder, so I assme she has something else in there to make her that big, but I have heard people say that whippets are just geting bigger....?

20 1/4 " shoulder, 28 lbs. I think he has slightly bumpy shoulders, he looks smaller than other 20" whippets.

I think it depends on the line they come from, even within that it can be quite variable. His father is 18 1/4 ", mother around 19", so he was the giant of his litter.

Yes they are whoppers now!! Rebel is a mini greyhound and weighs about 44lb!!!

I much prefer to see the smaller ones :thumbsup:

My biggest is Owen he is 20 1/2inches and weighs 17.5 kilos about 38 lbs

If we are at an open show and he is in a class of bitches he looks huge but at a champ show competeing against his own sex he does not look big

Forgot to say, Gelert's great uncle was Sooty Sam, a whopping 23"; looking at the ped of Sam there is not much difference from his breeding and that of Gelert's father, Laguna Liza's Link, who is tiny 18 " ish. Maybe it was less acceptable to take larger dogs to shows in the old days, larger dogs wouldn't have been eligible for coursing or racing so weren't as often seen on the various circuits.

I know a lady with 2 tiny Nimrodels (around 18 1/2 ish), apparently Mary Lowe thought they were too small for showing although they were very good specimens of their line.

Hero is my biggest at 21 1/2 " Folly is 20 1/2" Gracie is 19" & little Evie is 18 1/2"

When I first started showing Hero in 1999 he was one of the largest males in the ring. Now there are quite a few in the ring taller than that.

They are definitely getting bigger unfortunately!

Yes Oscar is around 22" and Kobi is almost 21". They are from different breeders.

My whippet male is 20 and 1/8" and 30lbs or 13.8kgs. :thumbsup:

The show lines are seemingly getting bigger, as these dogs are the ones winning in the ring ........As said earlier, the coursing and racing bred Whippets have height restrictions to be eligible for competition, and in the racing breds case they also have a weight restriction, so this keeps these types of Whippet's size down ............My biggest Whippet is 28lbs and 19 1/2 " ........where as my smallest is 21lbs and 18 1/4" ............Hope this helps

Oto is 20 1/2, and Otis is getting towards 21, i wouldn't want them any bigger but they regularily competes against bitches in the ring that are BIGGER than them and i'm afraid to say that some of these monsters have beaten them , think some judges need the breed standard slapping about their heads :angry:

There has ALWAYS been the odd `taller` whippet . I read an article in the Northeren counties whippet [SIZE=14pt]Golden Jubilee[/SIZE] book and there was a whole chapter on the `larger whippet in the ring ! with the same sizes we have now :- " dated 1960s` :thumbsup:

I know what (or should I say who) you mean Beaker!!!!!!!!!!! You know what they say - if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Folly (pups mum) is 18 3/4, both daughters are 18 1/2 and Riva is 21, A couple of people who commented on his size shut up rather quickly when they stacked there brindle dogs against him and - one was the same and the other bigger!! Has anyone else found that fawns look bigger than brindles - is it because there colour is unbroken?

I think it's absolutely right!

They should be judged as a whole, BUT there should be a limit in size.

Our Guszti is 53 cm tall. I hope that our Kapor will be smaller. :b
