I had one of those in my garden (quite a few years ago) had to call Pest control. (w00t) hope your dog was no worse for wear.

You think I stuck around to find out? (w00t) I know they got him at least once. He howled a bit! Luckily it was a cool day so they were not out in force.

I've been stung by these bald faced hornets. It's like a wasp sting plus being hit with a hammer.

Actually I don't mind them being around as long as their nests are off the beaten track. They are predatory and kill a lot of wasps. Fascinating to watch them dive on the wasp. They don't usually attack you unless you mess with the nest.

The one in the pic. is a small one. They easily get to twice that size around here.
