Hip dysplasia/ Arthritis

Hi Guys, I'm new to the Dog Forum.
I have a quick question about hip dysplasia. I have a 10 year old mongrel who I rescued as a pup so all we know is mum is a Spaniel. But we don't know who dad is. Over the last couple of years he's had a little bit of arthritis in his back legs but recently he's been getting worse. The other week his legs seized up whilst he was going down the stairs and he fell down a few steps. He was okay afterwards no limping or squeeling.
We have him on Youmove as recommended by the vet but i wondered whether there was anything else i could try? Or should i go back to the vets with him and have him checked over again?

Hi. Has he only been on Yumove for the week, or was he on it before the stair accident? I ask because it can take a little time for the Yumove to kick in. Other things to think about to keep him mobile and supple are hydrotherapy, massage and other supplements like golden paste, but check for contraindications with Yumove first

My last old boy had the same probs, got him on the supplements that take a while to kick in, as has been said, and also a magnetic collar. This worked fantastically for him, he went from collapsing in his back end on exertion to running around like a loon again, literally! But with Jake it knocks him bandy and disorientated him(even with a slow intro to it), and it seemed to age him and a few months later I tried again incase it was a weird coincidence but it affected him the same.. But generally magnets can have a good effect, might be worth a try or at least looking into?( I think Jake's reaction to them was unusual as opposed to common)..

We had a Collie cross that had joint problems at old age. With a magnetic collar, after a time she was moving a lot better. It could be a coincedence but it appeared to help her so we kept it on her.

Genuine question - how are magnetic collars supposed to help? Not trying to undermine anyone, just curious. Thanks

Not sure, I have come accross various explanations that sugest it 'improves' the blood to help with joint problems. As you can tell I was and remain sceptical about it, but as I said we tried it and it appeared to improve her so we kept it on her. On thing I was happy it wouldn't do any harm.

There are lots of theories on how magnets work, from the iron in our blood to affecting or balancing our own electric field or bio-energy... if you look it up there are probably as many theories as to why it's a placebo as to why it works! But with animals, to me, it's the same as using Reiki with them, they like and accept it or they don't, it helps or it doesn't, animals aren't subject to ideas like we are, therefore are more open, maybe, to complementary therapies, their experience can only be honest you could say? If something works for them, surely that's a good thing even if we don't understand how or why..
