Hi, i don't really post much on here but i really need some help, my 2 dogs were playing this morning as they usually do but the older one Pixie decided to turn on my younger one Rupert, he started yelping and i thought he had just hurt his leg as he is a big wimp until i noticed he was licking his side, i had a look and she has bitten a chunk out of him (this is really not like her) its about the size of a 50 pence piece and seems pretty deep, my husband is on his way home from work but i need to know if the vets could actually do anything to the wound or should i just make sure its kept clean?
 
Personally I would just wash it with saline solution (salty water) or if you keep Lavendar oil in the house

this will help to stop the licking.

If its any consolation my Oscar had a similar wound, and I just left it ...kept it clean daily and there is no sign

whatever of where it happened now... :thumbsup:

If it shows any signs of infection, or swelling then antibiotics may be needed from your vet.
 
There is a really good wound dressing I've used on my horse for this kind of open cut - it comes out as a gel and forms an anticeptic film over teh wound until the scab forms. Its not that expensive and ideal when stitches are not relaly needed but you have an area to keep clean. Comes in a white and red tube a bit like those push up touthpaste tubes and available from any livestock / tack shop. Sorry I've forgotten what its called :oops:

Thank you Janimal, i did think it would be ok if i just kept it clean but i was really worried, i will carry on with the cleaning and keep an eye on it.
 
Clean with saline solution as Janis has said, but don't forget the lavender oil, it really does aid the healing process. That said with posts like these a picture always helps as then we know what we are advising on, e.g. if the wound is deep enough to have penetrated muscle then anti b's would be advisable as a precaution. Try not to worry though, many of us have experienced something similar :huggles:

Thank you Annie, i do not have a clue how to put photos on here but i will give it a try, my husband has now gone back to work so if i fail he will do it later.

Willow had a similar 'hole' in her chest after playing. I cleaned it and kept putting lots of aloe vera gel on. It healed in no time :thumbsup:

Well, the wounds looking much better today, and he's also lying on it, we're keeping the patio doors open so he doesn't have to go through the dogflap too.
