Help needed if possible!

We have had our whippet for 2.5 yrs now and he is approximately 4. He has always been at home whilst we have been at work but recently has started going to the toilet whilst we are out. Any ideas how to stop this??

Also, can anyone recommend a good harness for a Houdini whippet???

I would get him checked over by your vet he may have a urinary tract infection which is causing him to wee while you are out. If he is pooing, have you changed his food or routine recently? Might need more details to help with this one!

There are lots of good harnesses for whippets like yours (I have one too)!! Dog Games do a good one as do Ruffwear.

Vet check first, as has been said.

If he is entire then are there any bitches around that might be in season causing him to scent mark?

Does he empty before you go to work or is he holding on for some reason? Check this first as some dogs will not toilet in front of people and wait for them to go out or go to bed. This is particularly common if they pick up vibes from people who, on finding pee or poo where it shouldn't be, react badly. The dog then wants to avoid any negative reaction from people and so waits until it is alone.

If this is the case or there is another cause of breakdown of housetraining then it is best to go back to basics and give a high value reward for toileting in the right place. Timing is critical. The reward must be given immediately not once the dog has left the spot.
