Poor old Muffin! I decided I really must cut his nails and he hates the clippers. But he was lying quietly and so I thought it was a good opportunity. But although it looked as though I was avoiding the quick I didn't (w00t) and it started bleeding. It did stop bleeding after a few minutes, but I had to go out for a couple of hours and as soon as I got back he started charging around and it began bleeding again. I think it's stopped again but I wondered if there was anything I could put on it (I don't have any of that powder that stops it bleeding). Is it going to bleed everytime he starts running about again? I think I need to invest in a dremel. I feel really guilty - poor thing, but it doesn't seem to be bothering him - just me! :(

how about cageing him for a while to keep him off his feet till it heals? :)

wipe his feet with the cuts with a solid bar of soap , will stop any extra bleeding

put a blob of super glue on a cotoon wool stick then dab it on the end of the nail thats bleeding

BUT BE VERY CAREFULL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just dip it in cornflour or any flour actually - works a treat!

Thanks everyone! I've left it for now as it's been stopped for a while, so as long as he doesn't go too mad with Jonah again I think it's probably OK. But worth knowing those tips. But I'm not trying that again in a hurry - I'm definitely going to give the dremel a try. :) I doubt whether Muffin would let me anywhere near him with a pair of clippers anyway! (w00t) Poor boy.

Poor Muffin :huggles: I did this to Molly once and she screamed the house down! I don't actually think it hurt as much as she made out though, I did it once to Pickle the guinea pig and she just carried on munching her hay :)

If it keeps bleeding why not try bandaging it? I always keep a few rolls of vetwrap handy for times like these or for when they damage themselves when running

Bicarbonated soda also excellent !!!

Put a dab of super glue on a cotton bud. Touch the end of the cotton bud to the toenail. It will seal the nail.

Don't put it directly on the nail from the bottle or you'll end up gluing toes together LOL.

I don't quick them often, but I do always have superglue and cotton buds in my nail kit for them.

I got some styptic drops from http://www.hyperdrug.com/ (just in case) because I often used to make my dogs nails bleed too.
Im now clipping more often which seems to make the quicks retreat into the claws faster.

Poor Muffin :(     they are big wusses arnt they when you get the clippers out.

styptic drops .... http://www.hyperdrug.com/prodinfo.asp?number=STYD

I'm going to get some of those. I keep meaning to get a proper first aid kit together - perhaps this is the incentive I need! :) Muffin's a bit fed up with me tonight because I only took him on a short walk and I wouldn't let him go out into the garden to play with Jonah - it would only have made his nail bleed all over again. So he's sleeping instead! -_- Hopefully, by tomorrow it will be OK.

PS Are the drops easier to use than the powder or vice versa?

I always use potassium permangonate if they break a nail , you get it from the chemist .

I just dampen a cotton bud and dab a little of the powder on the end then hold it on the cut for a few seconds .

I got the tip from a lady who had been in dogs for years and she also used it to seal the wound after removing dew claws .

Works a treat but does sting a little and watch and not get it on your clothes as it turns purple/brown when wet

Hope this helps :huggles:

I also used to use potassium permangonate = condy's crystals, but unfortunately it can be used to make incendiary devices, and so is no longer available in OZ. I found the hard way when couple of months ago I decided that the jar of Condy's crystals, which i had for almost a decade, is too grubby and flushed it down the loo. :- "

After trying every possibility I knew including the chemical labs in Universities, I bought a dremmel. Best tthing i ever did. The dogs still hate it, but they do not struggle as vigorously and as it only grounds the nail slowly there is NO blood.

So although my experience of acquiring the dremmel was rather hairy - I bought mine from the USA, where they have only 110V power supply, so the transformer burned out the moment I plugged it in (replacemnt $50), paid for it accidently from an old account i did not have any money in (overdraw fee :( ), did not look how much it costs to send over (US$30) and had to get somebody to rewire the plugs - so in the end a $29 dremmel cost me............$170 (w00t) (w00t) (w00t)

 Talcum powder stems the flow, too.

I tried a nail file on mine, they had legged it before I could do a second rasp (w00t) . I have to bribe them with chockie drops (dog ones) one drop per claw, 2 as a bonus per paw and 4 as a reward for a finished job, it has helped, but they all hate it with a passion :sweating: :( . Now old one eye Freddie the Legend (RIP) never batted an eyelid (well his one and only eyelid that could be batted) and clipping his nails was a breeze.

If only they were all as cooperative as the Legend.

Can you believe Pearl is howling for me to come up stairs and go to bed. I request I just cannot refuse! :huggles:

Muffin is all mended now! :) But he has one lovely short nail and 9 far too long nails! (w00t) Will have to try again soon. Thanks for all your replies and tips.

 That should read, 1 lovely short nail and seven far too long nails! I don't know much about dogs, I'm afraid. :- "

  On his front paws that is!

I'd give the Dremel a go. I couldn't do Fred's nails without one now, although it still takes some bribing with biscuits to get him to sit still and not wriggle away. However, that's nothing to his previous performances when using clippers. It would take one person to hold him and another to cut, and I'd end up with scratches and would really struggle to hold him still.

The difficult part is not to let them sniff the Dremel whilst it is running, or they'll get a sore nose :p Also don't get your hair in the way...a strand or two of mine got caught up one day with rather disastrous results :D I think you'll be fine though. :)

I found the easiest way to do mine is to have them upside down, with their back against my chest, bottom on my knees. Then I just take one leg after other, hold each toe betwen my thump and forfinger, with middle finger streched out to rest my right hand on to keep the dremmel steady. Yesterday I even dremmeled Stella's nails at a show, sitting ringside, without any embarassing moment. :) I would have never dared to attemp to cut them with clippers there :b
