hi everyone!

New to this forum so thought I’d say hi, I’m a mum to a 5 year old Pomeranian called Oscar and I was hoping to get some advice. Circumstances have changed for me and I won’t be able to keep Oscar anymore. I don’t want to put him in a kennel, and I’m not looking to sell him. I would love to find a family that can take care of him, does anyone have any advice on how to go about finding a new family for him?

I am really sorry to hear you have to rehome your dog; it must be a very upsetting process. Just a few suggestions of possible routes for rehoming him.

Are you still in contact with his breeder / have their details?
They may know of people looking to rehome an older Pomeranian or should at least be willing to offer advice and support.

Most breeds have a ‘breed rescue’ which is usually attached to the breed club. I had a quick look at the UK Pomeranian Club website (assuming you live in the UK) and there is a name and phone number of a club member you can contact regarding rescue and also an email address. (Sorry, I am also a newbie to the forum so I can’t post links yet).

I have also seen some dog rescue centres advertising dogs for rehoming that are still living in the owner’s home rather than at the centre. I guess the advantage of doing it this way is that the rescue centre can carry out all the vetting / house checks on the potential owners for you.

Can i add that if there is any chance that your change in circumstances will be temporary, some organisations can arrange fostering.

Thanks Buddy, really helpful tips, Oscar was a gift so I don’t know his breeders but I will definitely look into it. Yes I’m in the UK so will also have a look at the website. Thanks again!

Oh Im so sorry to hear this. You could try rescues such as the dogs trust . I adopted my chi from Pro dogs direct but they dont cover all areas mainly south east . They put the dogs in foster and do proper homes checks etc .

We've all heard the stories of what seems like a genuine loving new home actually wanting to get 'bait dogs' for training fighing dogs I'm not sure if this is as common as what you see on social media sometimes suggests, but it does happen.

Good luck - I really hope there's some way you can find a temporary home for Oscar and then take him back when you're in a position to.

That’s my biggest fear! I’m so scared to send my little man to the wrong home and him getting hurt. My ideal situation would be to do temporary fostering but I have a lot of research to do this week....

Absolutely be careful! I agree with the good advice you've been given. A national rescue such as Dog's Trust are worth talking to and will have a very professional approach to ding the best for you dog. Otherwise depending on your area a well-established local rescue. Do some research and see if you can find out what people say about them on-line. I do homechecking for one near Manchester and they have a website and facebook page with everything open and above board. A good rescue will fit the dog to the home, keep in touch and provide back-up. They will take the dog back if it's unhappy. I wish all breeders were as responsible. Good luck- it will be tough giving your dog up- I've seen people in floods of tears. But knowing he is safe and loved will help you.
