Hi

We live in the Manchester area, and have just entered the world of the whippet,. My wife and myself are completly amazed at how much intrest there is for these dogs. Or puppy or should I say Phoebe is eight weeks old and as you can imagine the house is slightly untidy to say the least, as any one any ideas how to go on about training her, just the basics really :)

We are also confused over the right way to go with her diet , I am sorry if this has been posted elsware on the forum :( but I did look honest. Pwresently she is on Beta puppy as this was what the breeder had used, We are not to sure wether to carry on using this dry food ,What do you think , We have read a bit on this BARF diet thingy , but the thought of it is umm, any ideas :)

Thanks everyone , the forum is a great idea, we really like it :)

Hi Stuhough - Welcome to K9. Ive got two whippets now thanks to this great site.

Oscar is 11 months and Kobi is 14 weeks. I have a crate for the puppy at night to sleep in. Id never had a crate till I got Oscar, and I did own two previous whippets, and a spaniel ..when I lived with my parents.

I find the crate invaluable to keep him safe and get the two dogs used to each other.

Hope you get some good advice on this site. Good Luck with your pup. :luck:

(Any pictures by the way)

Welcome to K9. If you are happy with feeding Phoebe Beta puppy then why not stick with it. Thing about feeding is everyone has their own ideas about what is good feeding and what is not.

For the first time in years I've raised a pup for the first 6 months on complete puppy food. Several people on this forum have said (in discussions) that what I've fed my pup on is rubbish but I'm happy with how he's turned out. He doesn't lack in bone or muscle, his coat has always looked good, he's never grown unevenly, and he's a fairly big fella. ;)

With feeding I'd suggest that anyone looks at the alternatives with an open mind and when you've found something that you want to feed then try it. If the pup looks plump, has a good coat and isn't having stomach problems then there's no problem. If you're not happy then change to something different.

Incidentally if you do decide to change from Beta Puppy then it's best to do it slowly as sometimes you can get slightly upset tummy's for a few days.

One thing I would add is that raw chicken wings are good for cleaning their teeth. Even if you don't decide to feed BARF you can still give those as a weekly or daily extra. Small pups can safely eat the wing tips and then gradually work up till she can eat the whole wing. Personally I would never feed a whippet anything other than a chicken wing. My deerhound has had turkey necks and whole chicken carcasses. IMO I wouldn't feed thighs etc as the whole point of this kind of feeding is lots of bone and gristle with little meat. It's the bone not the meat that you are feeding and the bones have to be raw to be safe. Got carried away there. :b

Also we will need to see lots of pics of Phoebe.

Welcome, once she's jabbed up you're more than welcome to pop along to the Northern to meet K9ers and their dogs.

What is her breeding?

Welcome to K9 Stuhough and Pheobe.

Remember the 3 Ps of training, Patience, Practice and Praise. Most of the naughty things Beau did were caused by something I didn't do properly, like shut the laundry door, hence the woollen duster all over my lounge.

Enjoy your new baby, its such a special time and don't forget to write, we love pictures and stories.
