Have you broken your own rules that you put in place when you got your dog?
To be honest, I don’t think I’ve stuck to any of mine! :D

Then: the dog will not be allowed on the furniture
Now: she is allowed on all furniture

Then: the dog will only go in the back of the car
Now: she sits up front with me doing her nose art on the window
 
Then: my dog will not rule my life
Now: anytime I’m invited anywhere “can my dog come?” “No?” “Then I’m not coming”
 
Then: the dog will not live a better life than me
Now: me rummaging through the cupboards trying to scrape together something to eat while Madam is tucking into her expensive organic human grade dog food on a silver platter
 
True to all of the above @Sezzy !! apart from Dennis doesn't go on the sofa's but I do have to move his bed over to the sofa at night so he can be part of the pack still! :D:D
 
You get used to them, Violet - we have one to give the cat a safe refuge, one on the kitchen so Jasper doesn't try to 'help' with food preparation, and another (actually a fire guard) for when people come to the house who Jasper might think are a bit scary. Oh, and one (another bit of old fire guard) so I can stop him air the bed & bedroom without him getting mud all over the sheets.

yeah i probably would get used to them i've just spoke to the other half and he's looking at baby gates is this what i should look at? Olive is crate trained now i think, so would Doris also be crate trained am i thinking right with getting gates?
 
What specifically would you want the stairgate for? Keeping her downstairs, or out of the kitchen, for example? There's a lot made specifically as dog gates rather than baby gates, though I'm sure a baby gate would work. Some are spring-loaded to fit in the doorway, some screw in, some are freestanding... If you do a google image search for 'dog gate' you'll see all sorts.

from going upstairs, we have ordered a dog gate because its easer than a baby gate
 
All of these here too - a bit like the teatowel @Josie posted elsewhere. So, in summary:
  • Dog will sleep downstairs. Now sleeps upstairs, but in his own bed.
  • Dog not allowed on furniture. He now goes on the furntiure. He should have a blanket down, and usually goes on that on the sofa, but sometimes he'll just jump up (and get told he shouldn't do that ;)).
  • My wife's rule - he will not be allowed on the bed. Ever. Now she gets upset if, when I got to work, Jimmy fails to join her for a cuddle on the bed :D I have lots of photographic evidence of her and Jimmy asleep on the bed, which I like to show her to remind her of her unbreakable rule! :D:D:D
 
About the only one still in place here is no dogs upstairs and that has to hold as my poor cat needs somewhere dog free to hang out without being hassled by a puppy who is desperate to be friends. One day I hope they'll be able to share space but at the moment the cat really doesn't want to know...

Have broken every rule except one. He doesn't sleep upstairs. He does come up during the day if I am up there, he also comes up in the morning when hubby brings me a cup of tea, and joins me on the bed. He has never been crated and sleeps on the sofa most of the night, but he does change places (I have a dog monitor and I look at it if I wake in the night).
Most evenings he is on the sofa with me and husband.
Our downstairs area is open plan so he basically has the run of the house.
