Going Down The Garden To Eat Dirt

My dogs are madly digging up the lawn and eating the soil from just under the surface. They absolutely relish it, and even squabble if another one tries to infiltrate their excavations. They did it last year, but this year is perilous for humans walking over the diggings. Are they taking minerals, and what spurs them on with such relish? Are anyone else's dogs doing this?

Mine do that every year, just deep anough to trip me up :lol: Even the terrier does it. Maybe its the new shoots they are after
