wot is the best way to get a dog in top form. some people say that workin them by alot of trialing and lots of walkin. but some people say that they should be rested before a big event
BIG DILEMMA!!!!!!!!!, what works for some dogs, does'nt work for others!!!!, I have also heard about keeping you're dogs ultra-fit on the run up top big races keeps them race fit(knowing my luck they would either be injured or knackered!!) but I've also heard that resting them before a race and after a race also helps, I have also been told of a "famous"racer they can help me win weight groups/opens(no thank-you if it's cheeting-I don't play that game).
only you know you're dog, if you feed right, exercise right and the breedings right, I suppose it's trail and error(we've all done it!!!), it would be great if there was a magic solution(without cheeting), but there is'nt. my answer is carry as normal, it can either do it or it can't
hi anthony.... i myself dont do anything different leading up to a big race, weather permited i just take my dogs out get them to a safe open field and let them do as they want. if not i walk them one to two hours a day. as greyhound men say astayer needs work for stamina, but most sprintrs can just get up off the kitchen
floor and still win races, although i agree wiyh michele
My grandad firmly believes (and he's raced for 50 yrs so his words good enough for me) that to get them race fit (to build up their stamina & lose a bit of weight), free run them (or let them run along side a bike) say for a month before you intend to run them at a big event and then for a week/week and half before the big day, keep them on a lead and fast walk them (road walking is another good tip). By the time your dog comes to race you will feel that certain edge about them that they a gagging to run.
TRY IT ANTHONY NO MATTER WHAT DOG. (i'm not quaranteeing the dogs will win but this way you'll get to see a far better performance)
It has always worked for my dogs.
PS. we once had a bitch that wouldn't run bends and by keeping her on a lead she was deprived of a free run hence she was eventually quite happy to run on the bends.
I have said all this now and you might be in the same wight class as me - bugger!!!
anthony how do you cope with all them dogs being all such a young age, i myself start a pup off at about 6 months walking getting them used to surroundings go to football matchs and the local whippet racing to build there confidence around people and noise after a good months walking free run then a few times a week to find there legs then you can start schooling them with short slips and over time getting longer till there going all the way up the track. all this process will get your dog fitter and prepare them for racing. then after that you can assess your dogs and find out what works for them. bluegoblins fitness was walked half a hour in the morning raced on a weekend and a mid week solo if she never got a mid week solo she would lose time fullstop fitness was run on a weekend off the sofa if you walked her she would lose yards then when we had smurfete she would walk all day run every night given half a chance and got better every run see the thing is youll find there all diffrent
i used to walk miles with my dogs wonderwall and punch box , and rest them for a couple of days before
racing, punch box used to run well on alot of road work,
but wonderwall didn't seem to run well . so i just take him out let him of lead and let him do what he wants.
worked with him he improved 100%, i alway s give him an hour in porta mag when returning home from racing
then have a good look at him in the morning,if ok i just take him out 10 minutes to empty. i think all dogs need a good blow out at least twice a week.
