Getting Rid Of "rolling" Smells

Just recently I was telling my wife of a topic I came across which discussed ways of getting rid of some of the smells which join our whippet Prince after he has been rolling. "I must look at that," she says ... but I cannot find where it was and the search engine does not seem to pick it up. I know that rolling in various scents is utter joy for whippets (and many other dogs as well) but the resulting aroma does rather spoil matters when he wants to join us later. We try rubbing him with wet wipes and even give him a wash down but the smell often seems to remain. I seem to remember some reference to tomato juice or ketchup but, as I say, I cannot find that topic again so I do not know what it suggested to do. What do you find works, please?

I really hope someone knows about this as jambo gave his face and neck a right good rubbing in the field where the farmer had just sprayed with pig slurry which is just the most disgusting smell :x he was like a man possessed trying to rub on as much as he could before I got to him to kick his ar*e :angry: this was 3 days ago and I have shampooed and wiped him but the little sod still smells :blink: we live about half a mile away from this field and we can smell it!

the best thing we use for things like fox poo it tomatos sauce get plneaty rub it ina nd let it dry if you can then brush it out i carry little sachay of it with me in the fisrt aid kit now saves the pong getting in the car

That's interesting, Meg is a 'roller', fox poo being a favourite and the smell the worst and most persistent :x

I've used tomato sauce with good effect, but as she's a hairy little thing it's a nightmare to get off again. I'll try juice next time!

I also keep doggy wet wipes in the car which work really well, you can get lavender smelling ones from most of the supermarkets and they get rid of the smell, Molly loves fox poo and finds some to roll in on nearly every walk :x :x

Thank you, folks. Tomato juice will be the first choice I think (ketchup and poo - wow, what a combination!!!) The interesting thing is that he seldom seems to bother rolling on the way out on our regular walk (too busy exploring, I suppose) but as soon as we turn to come home his behaviour alters and that's when he gets the greater urge to roll.

He's still loveable though. It's just that when he gets on the (covered) settee and snuggles up, that's when the pong hits home!

A friend who lived in Canada where dogs often got "Skunked" said that people used tomato juice and white vinegar. Drench your dog in tomato juice or vinegar, rub well into coat and leave to soak deep into coat for a good few minutes. Rince off and repeat if necessary. This works on Skunk spray so hopefully one or both will sort out the pungent smell.
