Gestation Period, Induced Labour & Caesar

My Claudia is in her 65th day, counting from the first mating, and I am getting somewhat worried. Took her to vet yesterday (Saturday) who assured me that she is fine, no signs of distress, no pup stuck, and told me that normal gestation period is 63 - 70 days. That is all very well, but i keep records of all my Whippet litters and the gestation period from the first mating has so far been from 56 days to 62 days. So I cannot help worrying. Although I feel quite reassured by the fact that as she slept pressed against me, I have been kicked all last night by the football team she is carrying in her belly.

Just wonder, does anybody have Whippets that carry their babies for the 63 days or longer. And has anybody had to have Whippet induced. I am stil hoping it does not come having to have a caeserian.

Here she is today, I did not want her on the table, but the minute she sees the camera she is up there. She really only just made it today.

Lida, my girls go no more than 60 days. I took Bella to the vet last time when she didn't give birth naturally by 60 days. They said she was fine & I should wait but I insisted they do a prog. test. 2 hours later the results came back & they phoned me in a panic saying get her down there RIGHT NOW. They were waiting, all scrubbed up, when I arrived & she had a caeser there & then. 10 puppies. My advice, what it's worth, is get her back to the vet, pronto. Good luck. I hope it all goes well.

It's not 60 days from mating but 60- 63 days from ovulation. Did you have a progesterone test to show when she ovulated? If not, although she may have stood perfectly well for mating, it is easily possibly that she didn't ovulate then but some time after. The dog's sperm is viable for about a week so like your vet, although I'd be on a red alert for signs of something wrong, I wouldn't worry yet. Good luck.

Thanks, Gay and Gail. This was the first time in a long time I did not do progesterone test before mating. The owner of the stud dog flew him down to me, and as he was arriving on the day 8 and could stay as long as we wanted, i did not bother.

I am pretty sure she is OK, and actually she started to nest few ours ago. The pups have moved further back since yesterday, and so I hope she will whelp tonight. If not I will take her to Sandown veterinary Hospital; they are greyhound/sighthound specialists.

This is going to be my last litter; after 40 years and some 17 litters with no great drama, I was hoping this is also going to be uneventful whelping.

She deffo looks ready to drop her brood very soon...try not to worry too much, most Whippet litters go without a hitch. As you already on alert I think it will be within a day.... :thumbsup: :luck:

There's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be uneventful. Personally, I wouldn't subject her to the stress of another vet visit. The pups will come when they are ready - usually timed with maximum inconvenience

Claudia has been now really ripping the bedding in the whelping box. Lets hope she gets going soon It is now 10.30pm; I guess I better get ready for a long night; and I am out of chocolate!

Fortunately, my dogs love going in the car and do not mind going to see our vet. I only have to touch my car keys and Claudia is by the front door; her 5kg belly and all.

I hope by now the little ones have arrived.

One of my bitches went 6 days over so went to 69 days. I had taken her to the vet and he said she was ok and to leave her be.

I've loged in this morning & come straight here in the hopes of puppy news. SO pleased everything is going well, Lida. I could phone you or, probably, even shout from here (maybe not) but I won't disturb you - will check back here later. Which dog did you use this time? :thumbsup:
