right I crew up thinking I had so much welsh blood in me and being born in Northampton, England and so passionate to be so, I always had a soft spot for Wales, I’ve been there, not a great reseption I must say ,, and too be honest always supported the 4 nations in world cups , but always kept my eye on the Welsh,but my very good buddy Darren is mad on this genealogy stuff, always asked me and too be honest I’ve not been bothered, I know who I am! So I thought , so apart from the European stuff, most of my roots are from Somerset! Geez, I was so not aware, while having a drink over the phone one night I gave in and he told me all this, told me stuff I really didn’t know which even surprised my mum when I told her, my father is dead now and I bet he didn’t know either, anyway sorry it’s a long post but love to hear more from people who are in to this.

I do find it interesting but never gone in to it apart from the origin of names. I've got a lucky dip from Scottish garlic,Welsh,Viking to Norman.
I do have a family member who is working on a family tree. So far we are still rooted in Yorkshire.

I find genealogy SO interesting. But I have not made effort to follow mine or OH's roots because I know it will be a hole that will swallow too much of my time that nothing else would not get done. Welll....I have dip my toes a little and done little other local historical records search to give me a good idea how attention absorbing it can be...you just don't realize how whole night will disappear in a flash and then having to go to work with just an hour or two sleep behind me...
In my family we have had few people that have kept some records so I know I could quite easily to go back in time for at least mid 1800's. Yes..it is not a lot as such, but my roots are in eastern Finland where lot of records were not only lost during battles with Russians but back in days, those parts of the country were not anything posh, lot of farmers and all sorts other humble country folk..so the other than the records of births and deaths (if they survived) there is not much accompanied other interesting historical info to find about.
My dad's side of family does seem to have had odd few who packed their bags and at least tried their luck further away from Finland...me included. And we know that my Mom's maiden name that is not very common has some connection to Swedish Royal's..some branch were sent to Finland to govern and their surname was 'Finlandinized' (can't think of other way of saying it)...so who knows, maybe I have a gene or two of Royalty in me ...
I wish I could dig deep into my history and I mean REALLY deep as I am convinced that somewhere along the line my roots have crossed the Channel before me. When I first arrived here and visited some places...in one place here in Nottinghamshire I got spookily strong de-ja-vu feeling that even now, almost 30 years after I recall how the hairs back of my neck got up and funnily enough...I've never felt that I moved into strange country. I've always felt as much home here, if not more, than back where I came from. It was instant 'I am home' feeling...so weird. I did thorough 'job' with feeling being home...my surname is now Britton!!

My dad investigated his family a few years back, and my uncle investigated my mum's. Both sides had been in Somerset for several generations - three or four generations on my dad's side all grew up in one cottage in Ilminster: House Price History and one relation moved from there to a house just over the road, which I went to as a child visiting relations.

My grandad on my mum's side was the youngest of nine, his parents farmers, and grew up just a few miles from the farm my mum grew up in. My great-gran on that side was reported to be dark with olive/sallow skin - maybe some Mediterranean input? - and most of the family in that line have dark hair and sallow skin, me included.

There was a bit of inbreeding on my dad's side - I think two cousins married - which makes the family tree complicated. And given how people back then never seemed to move far from where they were born, who knows how small my gene pool might be?

JudyN, I can remember reading somewhere that the invention of the bicycle did more to improve the genetics of country folk than anything else. I come from a long line of Lancashire village folk, mostly from a couple of villages and yes their was quite a bit of close breeding. (I would guess the KC would now frown on the COI involved).

I’m adopted so I don’t know my family history.

All I know is that my birth mum was blonde, blue eyed and fair skinned and I am dark haired, dark eyed and olive skinned. Unknown history of birth father.

I found out during pregnancy that I am a carrier for thalassemia which is a blood disorder (I show no affects) and is commonly found in these countries: Italy, Greece or Turkey.

I need to do one of these tests!
