Our 10 month year old whippet 'Harry' is underweight, We feed him 5 -6 packets of Butchers puppy food and biscuits/treats during the day.

He gets plenty of exercise (around 2 - 3) hours a day.. What do you suggest we feed him to quickly put weight on him. He's a much loved member of the family and we hate to see him like this. Any help would be great !!

Welcome to K9. If Harry (great name) is very underweight perhaps he needs to see a vet. If he is regularly wormed, and eating plenty perhaps a check up might be a good idea and your vet can advise you on feeding. I think that most whippet owners at some time, think that their dog looks a bit thin. Our Kiah tends to be a skinny bird but she does go up and down sometimes for no apparent reason.

All the best. Let us know he gets on.

i would suggest you cut down his exercise to at most an hour. Anymore and you are burning off to many calories :luck:

Hello there,

I am not an expert but I do think that perhaps 2 - 3 hourss exercise is too much for a 10 month old, especially if that inlcudes alot of running.

As for putting on weight, I find that raw tripe is very good and they love it! You can buy it frozen and just defrost the amount that you need for the day. Dont under any circumstances cook it as you will be feeling sick for weeks from the smell :x

Some puppies are naturally slender and take longer to mature than others. I have two six month old puppies from the same litter, fed the same food and one is a skinny minny and other is a little barrel (w00t) . Also, are you up to date with worming? I am sure that others with more experience will have better ideas!!

Welcome to K9, I agree that 2 hours a day is too much for him, I have a 10 month old and she doesnt get even an hour a day - at this age maybe 2 x 20 minute walks a day with some free running and some street walking

Tined and sachet foods do have a lot of water - have you thought about raw food and biscuit or a very good complete food. I find tripe excellent to keep weight on them

lots of luck with your boy.

I find that raw chicken necks or chicken wings, or stew made with ox tongues, hearts, tripe and sweet potatoes, pumpkin, carrots and rice or pasta put weight on my dogs in no time. Also canned sardines mixed in their kibble helps.

As others said cut down the exercise

When I changed Diesel's ownership over the Kennel Club sent a puppy booklet out with his registration pack. This recommended 5 minutes exercise per month of age, twice a day maximum. That would be a maximum of two 50 minute walks per day.

Regards

I AM SURE THE COMMENTS ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF EXERCISE ARE RIGHT. THATS SEEMS LIKE AN AWFUL LOT FOR A YOUNG DOG, AND MIGHT EVEN BE DETREMENTAL TO JOINTS ETC AT THAT AGE?

Thx all for reply's

my wife took harry to the vets today, the vet said that he has to have his stool tested and maybe a blood test to see if he's allergic to any particular food i.e soya, potato, meats etc because he has been having diarrhoea and vomiting. The vet recommends that harry should have no more than 2 hrs of exercise a day for he's age. He weighed 10.50kg which the vet said was about right for him. So I feel a bit better now he's seen a professional and will keep you all posted of test results!!

Thinking about it I recall that Hollie went through a similar phase. She was pretty picky when she was young and also went through a long period, a good few months, of having a bad stomach. Like you we got concerned and went to the vet, had the stool tests etc etc and could never find anything wrong. She even had a course of antibiotics that had little effect. Tried every different food , concerned about allergies and all the rest of it.

In the end she just settled down on her own and now eats like a horse. Im sure it was linked to us taking her into the public parks in London and getting exposed to all sorts of nasty bugs which she finally got immune to. Friends have been through the same process with their young dogs.

Shes now onto the bog standard dog food - she didnt like all the premium brand stuff, non allergenic stuff. I think its right to ask the vet although suspect its nothing at all to worry about. I also think its a good idea to find a food they like and then stick to it rather than trying to give them too much variety - so long as its a proper balanced food

I used to feed an I think allergic dog (because of a difficult breeder, this was never thested). Her stomach was upset from the day one and it lasted for months. The breeder said it was puppy poop (yeh, right!). She also scratched herself to bleeding if not wearing socks.

We started to test different diets and we vent for complete raw food with grains and vegetables and meat. It seemend to do the trick. After that we slowly got her used to the most hypoallergic stomach caring dog foord that we could find. At the same time we fed her with a powder that balances the stomach. With this she was allright. Don't know what it was, but it went away. All that stayed was her habit of over scratching herself. The dog wasn't a whippet and doesn't live with us anymore, tough seeing from the condition she is today, the problem has come back..
