Fleas

Hi

Can anyone help?

Found a flea on one of our whippets this morning. We think he got it from the house we holidayed at last week. What's the best treatment and how do we make sure none are in our home?

Look forward to hearing from someone with advice about how to deal with this problem.

hi there ,i bath my lot in flee shampoo and use kids nit comb every week in summer i get bit of help from vets and also use household flee spay and wash bedding regular and hoover in all nooks and crannies ,hope this is of some help ,but im shure youl get lots of replies on this

I uses Frontline on my lot,hoover regular too and worm them with Drontal every three months

I also use Frontline on Megan. I have never found a flea on her yet but never say never :- " I use the pipette you just snap it and sqeeze on her neck. I get it from www.vetuk.co.uk they are really reasonable. I did use the Frontline spray once but for some reason it made her itch like mad but the pipette is great.

As for house I have hard flooring downstairs, carpets up (Izzy is generally downstairs most of the time :lol: ) and I hoover lots with a pet Dyson.

Izzy has never had fleas, in my limited whippet experience I am pretty sure with their thin fur you will spot them a mile off, i wouldn't worry it is most likely a one off picked up elsewhere :thumbsup:

I was also wondering about fleas, especially as summer approaches. I don't really want to use a chemical preventative, although I would if I found a flea. Someone suggested either feeding garlic, or using garlic oil [from Dorwest] on the coat. Has anyone any experience of garlic as a preventative?

I have also heard about garlic being a good prevantative for fleas but I have read several times that garlic can be bad for dogs (even in a health mag I read yesterday it said 'don't give garlic to animals as it can be toxic'). I would like to get this clarified as I don't like using chemicals if I can avoid it and I only treat if they get fleas, I have only ever had to treat Merlin twice. Willow has never had fleas.

By the way when I do buy flea or worming tabs I use Drontol or Frontline and I get them from www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk which is approx half price to my vets - I don't know if anyone knows anywhere cheaper.

I personally wouldnt trust garlic as a preventative....

although I do give my dogs garlic tablets.

Only Frontline for me... :thumbsup: I have cats too and often they are the ones bringing fleas in when they have caught vermin etc. So I regularly do both cats and dogs with Frontline....it works here.

Ive always used what the vet has reccomended ie frontline or stronghold. Apparently a cider vinegar bath prevents fleas, Cider vinegar has many uses for dogs and cats. Just google it. :thumbsup:
