First pet dog

Hi, I have just brought home an adorable Cocker Spaniel and I’m looking into getting pet insurance I’m thinking £10,000 or higher . But I’m really unsure as vet bills are very expensive, so I thought I would join this forum to get some opinion’s ?

I'd call my vet and ask what the most common treatments are for cockers, and what the less common but expensive ones cost, and base a decision around that.

I bought my first Cocker Spaniel at the age of 17 (that was 55 years ago) and have had them ever since.
Temperament with my 3rd one was most worrying and in the wrong ownership could have been a nasty dog. All 3 were show lines and were lovely dogs.
One of the show types had a problem with lip folds, this was operated on and solved the problem.
I changed to the Working type in 1985, their temperaments are fantastic and we have great fun with them.
I would not say that either type actually have any health problems that require pet insurance.
Very often if you neuter your Cocker it can ruin their lovely silky coats and regular clipping becomes needed, but that would not be an insurance claim!

All dogs are likely to cost us the occasional large vets bill for some reason or another, only you can decide whether to make the monthly payments or would it be better to save the monthly amount in a savings account as a backup yourself.

Maybe we have just been lucky with our Cockers.

Thank you for your reply very informative but I think for peace of mind I will get insurance as you never know .

In this day i would always have some kind of insurance as the vet bills are so high ...
I used Petplan ...expensive but always paid direct to my vet...make sure your insurance covers liability too ...
