Some thing really awful has happended to one of our friends today and it's makes you think. I wonder if there are any first aid courses for dogs that owners can go on for practical things to do to help an injured dog whilst waiting for a vet?

Our friends were walking their son's lovely 12 month old collie/springer JJ along the cliff tops at Burton Bradstock today. There are no fences along parts of the cliff top path, one of them went approx 2ft from the edge to see what the sea was like, the dog followed him and the cliff gave way and the poor dog dropped all the way down to the beach. The coast guard arrived within 20 minutes and JJ died just as they got there. I'm sure that there is nothing that could have been done to help him anyway and they must have felt totally helpless just standing by him and hoping for him to die quickly :(

They are in a terrible state as you can imagine and have now left to go home with his body in the boot, when this morning he was a lively young dog full of energy :(

They also have to tell their son :(

RIP JJ.

What a tragic accident.

Poor JJ, only hoping he didn't suffer too much at the end. The family must be devastated.

So very very sad.

I am so sorry to hear such sad news. It must have been horrific for them. What a shame. It will be just awful having to tell their son.

RIP JJ

Oh that's awful! :( What a tragic waste! :( My heart goes out to them.

RIP JJ.

What a tragic story :( Poor JJ - RIP little one.

thats just awful Rae.poor family must be heartbroken.R.I.P. little J.J. :(

Oh no, what a horrible story! I can't imagine how heart-breaking that must have been :( Poor JJ, and your poor friends.

Oh thats so sad, what a horrible nightmare for anyone to have to go through

RIP JJ

Thats my local beach - just a mile from me :(

What a tragic event, unfortunately this happens several times a year round here, often the dog is not on a lead. Obviously in this case being on a lead wouldn't have helped poor JJ.

The cliffs round here are very unstable, it always amazes me the number of people that sunbathe directly underneath them - there have been some nasty injuries on the beaches round here.

Poor JJ - I am so sorry for your friends, I can't even imagine how horrible it must have been :(

I have a book called Caring For Your Dog - The Complete Canine Home Reference - by Dr Bruce Fogle.  Has quite a good home emergencies and first aid chapter.  Great book to have if you don't already have a medical reference book.

How awful for your friends.  So sorry for their loss.

RIP JJ

i was thinking about this before,it could have ended up worse,if someone had been holding the dog on the lead, they could have been pulled over too :(

So sorry to hear this Rae - unfortunately in this sort of instance there's little anyone could do to change the outcome.

Most of you guys have enough common sense to do the right thing while waiting for a vet anyway - don't get bitten, but try to keep airways clear, stop bleeding by applying pressure and stabilise fractures where possible. Above all keep the animal as calm as possible and that means keeping unnecessary personnel away.

Poor JJ :(

Horrible thing to happen. My thought are with all concerned at this time :luck: :luck:
