Feeding A Forever Hungry Whippet!

Barney is 4.5 years old. He came from Rodene Whippets and has always been big!!! He also has a big appetite. Our other boy Dylan prefers to eat like a scavenger whilst poor Barney eats up like a good boy but will happily continue. Obviously we don't want him to get fat - he's a bit wide now. Does anyone else have a whippet like this?

Bluebell is a good doer like that, she eats less than half that Molly does and Molly is spayed! I wouldn't dare have Bluebell spayed, she wouldn't be able to eat at all!!!

I feed her at least one large carrot a day though as these fill her up!

For her main meal she has raw beef (150-200g) and a couple of small biscuits for breakfast

Exercise is the only thing that keeps her slim!

yep we have one of those, We had Duke from Lisa at Greyhound gap, when she had him he was way over 20kg and looked sooo fat his weight was reduced prior to us having him but we did have to continue for a while to keep him on a next to nothing diet, he is now 16 kg but is like your Barney a big dog he has a massive rib cage and stands at just over23 inches. Duke will still eat anything and everything and I swear he could get fat on fresh air alone! Dotty on the other hand is like Dylan she eats like a little bird and didn't start to gain weight until we had her speyed she is tiny 18 inches and 9kg. i have to say I worry if ever she was ill because she is such a poor 'doer', on the other hand Duke, as long as we are vigilant with him and monitor what he eats and exercise him plenty he is much easier. I think i'd rather a dog like him than one like my Dotty that you have to constantly try to keep her interested. I keep a check on Duke by how much cover he has on his ribs and it seems to be working, I'm glad to say Cassie is much the same as Duke, she loves her food!

Thanks both. I really think he would eat constantly if we let him. I don't want him to be hungry obviously but not fat either. What can I give him? More food and just watch his weight? I'll try him with a carrot or two too!!!!

As with people, exercise is the key. I have two who could eat for England but as long as they get to run about a fair bit every day, I don't have to diet them. People who do want to cut down their whippets' calories often give them green beans but with the price of food going up daily, that's not a cheap option. Any broccoli stalks from your meals could go his way, as well as carrots and any big bones you can get for him will give him the illusion of eating

Thank you for raising this, my girl eats well but not excessively, but hates exercise! She stays by my side while Hugo dashes around, she is smallish but weighs 13.3 kilos, and Hugo who is taller and bigger framed weighs 13.5 kilos, eeek! I'm not sure how to cut down her food as I feed them together...

Bran will make him feel full, also puffed rice! Looks a lot but has few calories. Cooked cabbage is good, grated carrot, lean meat, white fish and cooked chicken.

I have a spayed greyhound who is a pig, just keep her on a low calorie diet and plenty of walks, she is so lazy getting her to actually run is a pain. My spayed whippet bitch and castrated dog, well i just adjust the amount I feed, it they look s though they are getting fat, I just cut their food down. NO tit bits.

I have a fat boy too. Hector would eat for Britain given half a chance. Do you feed your dogs dried food? If so try soaking it in water before you give it to him. It makes the kibbles swell so the dog feels fuller quicker and won't eat as much.

It doesn't cost you anything and is worth a try.

Thank you guys, they have a mixture of cooked offal and fish for dogs, so I will cut down on the dried food and do more road walking as only one of them runs around off lead, good for all of us! Also will cut down on their treats as I'm sure thay mount up during the day! Xmas diet started for me, so I am looking forward to tackling the podge and hopefully we will all look better by then! Thank you all for your advice...

I buy the frozen fine green beans from Tesco which are £1 a bag and also their mixed veg which is brocolli, cauliflower, carrot and peas which fill my little porker up. I also feed 3 times a day which I think stops them getting so hungry as the food is spaced out during the day - breakfast chicken, rice and a small amount of biscuit, main meal at lunchtime tripe/beef or something like that with veg and then supper just before we go to bed which is chicken/sardines/mackeral/fish and veg. He has definitely lost weight and doesn't seem hungry and loves his veggies!
