I have been walking my cocker now for around a month and nearly every time we go to go home (he knows the route now) he starts trying to race away and throwing himself in the air while on the lead, he then ignores the no command. I usually stop until then we set off again and in seconds it starts again. I dont want to get him thinking if he acts up i will pick him up but at times i have to as it is a bit dangerous near a road.

I am planning on taking him somewhere new this week to test the "i know i am going home freak out theory"

any tips?

Wear old clothes, long sleeves :) he may be jumping on you too, not just in the air. And then he will grow out of it, and it will stop. He will be a proper dog, and you may even miss the wild and crazy puppy he once was. So enjoy it while it lasts, but of course keep it safe.

Does he seem to be trying to delay the end of the walk? Does he calm down if you turn around and go back again? (I would only try this once - you don't want to think that if he freaks out he gets to prolong the walk.)

Or does he seem to be just generally freaking out for the fun of it?

Is it directed at you at all? And is he on lead at this point?

How long are you walking him for, and does this seem to happen more the longer the walk?
