Hi There!

I'm a new dog companion and this is the first time we've wormed our 2yr old rescue collie/gsd cross.....and it's been a bit of a funny couple of days!

I gave the tablets then the next day he was wild at work (he comes to work with us) which was very embarassing because the boss was in and he's normally reasonably well behaved. My first thought was E numbers in the tablets making him hyper? Has anyone else had that? Then we noticed he didn't poo when he normally does, and very small hard ones when he did - so constipation. I gave the tablets Tuesday night, then today he's been mega grumpy, snapped at me a couple of times like he's unwell and then runny poo just now. Anyone thing this could be down to the drontal? If so are there any alternatives?

If this is the first time your dog has been wormed then it could be a couple of things.

A more common side effect is runny poo and/or diarrhea or the dog being sick. This happens with dogs who have more sensitive stomachs.

When the tablets have got into his system his colon could become blocked because of the dead worms the tablets have killed and he is struggling to pass them, therefore you are ending up with a constipated dog. This will cause moderate to severe discomfort for your dog which could be the reason he is acting very strange as he could be in pain.

This however is only a maybe. I am no vet, so I would recommend you get him to see the vet straight away so they can give him an examination and help you get him sorted.

Try not panic too much, this can be sorted and your pooch will be ok, but the sooner you get him to the vet the better.

For now, if he is grumpy and in pain leave him be. Don't fuss him or try and play with him, and keeps walks to a minimum until this is sorted. If he comes to you by all means give him some fuss, but from what it sounds like he wants to be left alone as he isn't feeling the greatest right now.

let us know how you get on.

Good luck
