Dog Whistles

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd post this in this forum too just incase any of you with working whippets (or any other breed for that matter) could help.

I was just wondering if anybody has any whippets trained using a dog whistle? The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to train my dogs to come without having to yell their names across the field (at half 5 in the morning!!!).

Thats the main command which I would like to teach, can anyone help or recommend any books etc??

Don't know of any books but a refs whistle works very well. Something with a high pitch works best. I prefer the stainless steel to the plastic. Think it's a higher pitch which dogs can hear better.

We do a lot of coursing in Wyoming where a course can go a couple of miles and the dogs can be quite a long way away. What with the wind and distance a dog could get dis -oriantated. (Is that a word, maybe lost would be a better choice!!)

A loud whistle gives them direction.

I've tried the "silent" type in the past and they work well at shorter range. The silent works well if you have a bunch howling or barking out in a kennel. A blast makes them stop and listen.

I use a whistle with mine. I don't use it all the time, only when I REALLY want them to come back............I find it a really good aid and they both respond. I also think it will carry further than my voice if they are out of sight (now don't go commenting on that any-one who knows me :b )

I use a gundog whistle that they all respond very well to .......theres a big collection and they range in sound and disance :thumbsup:

I use a sheepdog whistle with mine - it will even get the jack off a rabbit when she's in hunting mode!!

She was taught right from a pup that the whistle meant come now and get a treat - and luckily her love of food has outweighed everything else!!

Only thing is it takes a while to get the thing to work LOL.

same here plastic sheepdog whistle used when i want them back they know that whistle means business!
