I'm after somebody who can come to my house and feed/ let out my whippets at lunchtime when I am at work. Can anybody recommend somebody or a good company? We are in newcastle-under-lyme staffordshire.

There is an organisation called NARP (I think it is the National Association of Registered Petsitters) which may be helpful. :)

Your local vet might know of someone. Ours here (in Devon) was able to give me a name.
 
Thanks very much I didn't realise you were that close! There surely must be a company who operates in my area!

You are welcome, as i say if you have probs i dont mind letting your dogs out at lunchtimes or whatever, entirely up to you, just thought i would offer, being so near

I agree. Local dog sitters/walkers often advertise at their local vets with an advert on the notice board in the waiting room.
 
Please check and double checks references - and not just those they offer. If they walk in a specific park go there and ask around - can just ask if they know of dog walkers etc and gauge the reaction. One local company to me advertises with quality leaflets in prominant places but the reality isnt like the pictures for example they say no more than 4 dogs are walked at a time and it closer to 8, they have "staff" that the owners are not aware of and the time spent in the van is often longer than the walk as the pick up route is so long. I dont want to scaremonger but please be sure you check and ask everything you can think of.
 
I do pet sitting - not local to you - sorry!! But just to say as well as advertising at the vets I also advertise on the internet so that is another place to look - try vivastreet or gumtree type sites, or look at notice boards in the pet stores.

I know you have to be careful with dog walkers - I have seen one out and about with at least 6 dogs - some of whom looked completely terrified by the whole experience! I don't want anyone to walk them - we do this morning and night- just to let them out for a wee and a play and to give Archie his lunch.
 
Dog walkers will adapt to suit you in many cases, and may well be prepared to just let out your pup into the garden and feed it, but not walk it (mine was when i last had a pup). Ask for references if you ring someone, if you want to be certain they are honest and reliable.
 
I have actually thought of doing dog walking myself & have looked into it and personally i'd recommend going through NARP - everyone on their register has been visited in their homes, vetted, police checked and they're insured - if you are handing over the keys to your home then you have to be careful. I'm sure there are some great pet sitters that aren't NARP registered but unless they've been personally recommended you're better off going down the NARP route - they do charge you to access their register and I don't know how much but it's probably worth it.
 
Yes you need to be very careful - people you get to know through the internet are not always what they seem to be on the surface. Best to use a proper company who do police checks - you wouldn't want some perv going through your knicker drawer while you were out :eek: :unsure:

better safe than sorry :thumbsup: the trouble with the internet is its easy for people to give out a false impression of themselves.

i'd say get a relative/close freind to dog sit or use a registered company that way your playing things safe as June says you need to be very carefull.

mark and june are right :thumbsup: at least if you use a company you have more security as the staff would have been checked out :thumbsup:

and if anything did happen (god forbid)...at least you have a main base to go back to :thumbsup:
 
Heck. I think I was just lucky living in a very small town with the one veterinary surgery. The receptionist knew the lady who was advertising as a dog walker as she was local (are you local? :p ) and took her own dogs to the surgery. I had also seen the lady in town regularly, so knew she was well known round and about. I don't think I would have bothered with anyone on the internet.... :wacko:
