Because of Richard's job (vicar) we live in a vicarage, and so kept our own property in Shropshire when he went off to train. We have had good tenants there for 5 years but they've just told us they have bought their own house and will be moving out soon. :(

But that does give us the opportunity to try something different. We could find new tenants but the kitchen needs doing up, which might be a bit difficult as we live a good distance away. We could sell and buy a property in Nottingham which we could let out to students at the Theological college we went too - the college acts as agents. That would quite likely leave us money over to buy a Camper van or even a canal boat! (w00t) The third option is to buy a cottage much nearer to where we are, let it as a holiday home for around 6 months of the year, and the rest of the time use it ourselves as an 'escape' from the parish on Richard's day off, or for a short break.

So I was just wondering if anyone has experience of running a holiday cottage and the pitfalls. It would be good if anyone has any tips out there. We are very much at the process of thinking things through and I thought it was worth asking on here. :)

Why not just pray about it.In my humble opinion, the good LORD will guide you in whatever he want's you to do with it.You never know,he might have his own idea's about the whole thing.Just watching sky news at the moment, and boy are you lucky it's not one of the houses thats getting washed out at the moment.Another good prayer point for everyone on here,as im sure a lot know what those poor people are going through.

didnt know he was an estate agent lol

Having cleaned up on change-over days, no way would I have a holiday cottage. The grotty looking people would leave it spick and span! the posh nobs would leave it in a mess, washing up machine full of un-washed dishes. Nasty things in the loo, filthy cooker, the list is endless. Kids wetting the bed etc,

Don't do it.

I think if its humanly possible you should go for it, having a bolt hole closish to home would be invaluable for you and Richard - somewhere close enough to get to in no more than an hour, but far enough so that no one can get you...and don't hire it out to parishoners otherwise they'll know where it is!!

Vicars too are allowed some time out

I know Richard's parents (his father was also a vicar) had a holiday house which they now live in, and I remember that his mother was really busy with it at the weekends, but on the plus side, they did enjoy being able to use it when it wasn't let out and we also had some good family get togethers there as it wasn't so out-of-the-way as their vicarage.

I think we would see any property we bought primarily as our bolt hole from the parish, but it would be also be nice to have a little bit of income from it during the summer months.

Yes Keith, that's just the sort of thing we're looking for! (w00t)

Does that mean potentially no links with me here? :(

Seriously I would go for the holiday cottage if at all viable, that would be wonderful.

PS we looked at a house to buy where yours is yesterday

Hi Gill, if it's a holiday let make sure you get tax and legal advice to maximise your allowances

I looked at a place in Spain, but it's too far away for me to manage and I didn't want to rely on an agency :( I will get something there one day..... and just for John and I :- "

Oh and Izzy.............

How exciting to have these options ... my choice would be to rent to the students with the college acting as agents - that would give you the camper van or canal boat as somewhere to escape to all year round (have whippets, will travel!). Good luck with whatever you decide though :luck:

I was all for getting a camper van and then I suddenly wondered how the whippets would travel - they would hate to be crated while on the move and I can't think of any other way to do it - they couldn't be left to wander around the van! (w00t) So I think we're back to the cottage idea! :- "

Hmm, I didn't think about that  a holiday cottage sounds pretty fantastic too though  maybe you could rent it out to K9ers looking for dog friendly accommodation when you're not using it yourself. :D

That had already crossed my mind!! :- " Early days yet though! We still have to sell our house, and that could take months with the way the economy is at the moment. :sweating:
