Does Any Body Has A Galgo ?

Hello everybody !

I registered yersterday and can't find where to introduce myself... So I will do it here !

I am Adelaide and live in the south of France...Three dogs are sharing my life (on a permanent basis,since they are mine) but I often shelter one or two other since a am "foster familly" of an association called "SOS Levrier".

-Saska, is a big argentinian dogo, five of age, the sweetest bitch ever encountered... she lores averybody and accepts everything from other dogs...

-Tokia, two years old, crossed between "doors and window" as we say here, she is all black, and wheght three kilos, adorabable but very figgity... jumping, and wiggeling all the time !

-Ada is my precious bird, a Galgo adopted last june... She was saved from spanish hunters...

she is three ou four. Very calm, joyfull and dot at all obeidient... (by the way, excuse my writting, I have to go back to english, that is why a registered here ! Hihihi !)

Now I have a question for you here, Do you hage galgos here on the forum ? Maybee you don't call them the same here because I have'nt read any thing on those Spanish Hunting hounds yet...

Your dogs look and sound gorgeous. Yes, we have heard of Galgos and it breaks ones heart to read about them. Hopefully the Spaniards will take notice of the disapproval of other western countries and start to clamp down on the cruelty. Trouble is they have to go into quarantine still (I believe) so adopting in this country is not so easy. I would have one in a minute, if I could.

I think your English is very good - you should hear my French!

What part of the South of France do you live in? It looks stunning in your photos. I used to live in the Dordogne for part of the year, quite near Brantome. I miss it terribly, and I am trying to pursuade my husband that we should move to France. I know it's mad but I miss Auchan :wacko:

I met some rescued Galgos in Seville last year.....they were the most beautiful, gentlest dogs imaginable, so trusting despite having suffered dreadful cruelty

It is beyond me how in these modern times so many nations are still willing to accept and allow such hideous treatment of animals which provide us with endless service and loyalty.

it's a distressing read, and the photos even more so, but we owe it to the dogs to make ourselves aware if we aren't already.

Galgos in the UK? We do have some, brought over by a rescue organisation based in the UK, but I can't remember her name or web site. I know she rescues them from the racing tracks in Spain and ships them over here for a new life. But whether any of their owners come visiting K9 or not, I don't know. :unsure: I do recall that the dogs were in a dreadful state when she gained ownership of them and took them quite a while to become well again. The things people do to dumb animals :rant: ....

But I hope you have as much pleasure in the company of your dogs as is humanly possible and welcome :cheers:

for up to date reports go to the yearly dated Bulletins, but be prepared for some harrowing reading and images, these Galgos aren't simply mistreated, they're broken and destroyed by their owners.

Perhaps by joining k9 you will help these poor dogs by making any of our members who weren't aware of the terrible treatment that they get from their owners more aware of the situation - and just perhaps one or two more can be helped. The old saying is true - Mighty oaks from little Acorns grow!!

Your dogs look so great together! I really like the look of the dogo argentino, a breed which is actually banned in our country (along with am. staffordshires, pitbulls, tosa inu and I think the fila brasileiro).

I am sure you all know this, but "galgo" simply means sighthound in Spanish. Greyhounds are "galgo ingles". So, the rescue galgos are not necessarily purebred "galgo espanoles" as the FCI registerable breed is called, but more often than not have a lot of racing greyhound blood.

Be that as it may, the way they are treated is horrendous. We can only hope there will come a day when the rescue organizations are superfluous.

I came back from spending two days at a friend's house last night... she has three adopted galgas and live in Montpellier, one houre away from Avignon, way down south of France. We love to bring our greys to run on the beach... they go crazy !

Here is Ada and Saska whith Soraya and Gigi after the run : Those Galgos are allways so friendly...

OEM I am glad to see that you have heard of Ann Finch... Beautifull lady by the work she accomplishes... As a matter of fact, on the 12 of march, I will bring one of her dog back to france to be adopted or sheltered... among seven other galgos.

I work with one of the many small associations fighting against grey abuses and cruelty called SOS LEVRIER... and we are in close contact with Ann Finch.

You can even see on the Greyhounds In Need web page, a picture of our dogs, with the last dogs we brought back from Spain, .. It is the second picture. Yes Bardmand, I know that galgos are sighthounds... it is funny, I had never seen a dog look up at the sky like Ada does when there is a plane, a bird or even a fly...
