Difference Between Ig & Whippet? (New Title As Thread Changed))

A new owner, a new K9, a new start! Lets try & get the IG section back up & running & BUZZING. Lets make it a place where we can see show results, chat & discuss different topics & make it an interesting place. I've always wondered what the difference is between the temperaments of the IG and Whippet. They are so much alike in looks. Is there a similarity in nature?

Hope the thread attracts lots of positive feedback for you. I have certainly noticed a decline in hound socialising on K9 since I was here last year.

Hi Sadie,

Thanks for posting. I hope some others also reply to your question too. I have kept both IGs & Whippets for over 25 years now & have to say i personally find them totally different in temperament.

As pups whippets can be quite destructive & touch wood i have never had a destructive IG pup (not to say that others haven't i'm sure!) but i never have. As they get older i find whippets on the whole a lot calmer, once they have had their walk & run they will happily come home & go off for a snooze or amuse themselves in the garden where as the IGs are constantly on the go & wherever you are they are & constantly want to be on your lap or tormenting you!

If you sit down they wont sit next to you they have to be on you or up your jumper they would almost get under your skin if they could, to be that close to you.

I find the IGs on the whole noisier than the whippets & more inclined to bark if someone knocks at the door or they see another dog whilst out on a walk.

They are both extremely loving affectionate breeds but i find the IGs far more demanding of your time & far more hyperactive. If someone comes, to visit the whippets will make a fuss & then go off to their beds where as the IGs will not stop until they land on the visitors head or force themselves on their lap whether they are wanted or not!

So summing up i would say if you want an energetic but fairly quiet, laid back good tempered lovely hound get a whippet. If you want an affectionate "in your face"" i will do exactly what i want when i want" hyperactive demented flea that leaps from one place to another BUT is the most loving, comical, intelligent little dog you will ever meet, get an IG!

I love both breeds equally & dont think i would ever be without either.

Nina, that was an honest, all round description - thank you! As one of Jacques` traits is to follow me around from 9am to 11pm I wouldn't be happy being THAT on demand to an IG! That said, I know they can be very amusing and great fun, as their life is for living and I've heard they make the most of every second!

My first whippet was Celerity bred by Mrs Norfolk, and such a darling. Quiet, gentle, obedient, faithful, easy to train and socialise with other dogs. We had him at 15 months and lost him aged 10. I have never known such a gentle dog since. 40 years on and our Jacques is the most beautiful of whippets, but needs so much attention/care.

I wonder what other changes have taken place in both breeds - both for good and bad? I know the whip has become bigger and with our Sam the auto immune condition reduced his quality of life dreadfully. Only the Rescue, his courage and our commitment gave him 12 tolerable years.

One day when Jacques is through this `confidence building` we will get a companion for him. Until then I hope to familiarise myself with as many breeds as possible. The next dog will be our last so we need to get it right!

Thank you for describing the IG to me. They sound delightful - hard work - but delightful!!

Hey Sadie sounds like your Jacques is a work in progress but you are doing well.

There have been a lot of changes in both breeds good & bad & without going into all of them they are the reason that i have chose to continue in IGs rather than whippets although i will probably always have a whippet as a pet i dont much like where they are going breed wise. But i guess we all see things differently & this is just my personal take on it.

It has indeed been nice to meet you too Sadie & i have enjoyed your posts, keep joining in.

Hula, i have also had 2 toy poodles & their love of life & energy is very similar to IGs & they are a little bit crazy too! :- )
