I work at a school and today there's a young lurcher bitch hanging around the schoolgrounds. The caretaker says he saw her there on Sunday as well. She mostly lies in a corner by the fence, so the caretaker thinks maybe somebody dumped the bitch from a car and that she's waiting for that person to come back for her. I have seen lurchers around the school before, probably because it isn't far from a travellers' site.
She's black medium size, maybe 23 inches, black, smooth coated, a greyhound-like tuck up but her face is not so fine-muzzled as a greyhound and she has larger ears. She is not underfed but there is something wrong with one of her legs, which looks very mangy. I expect the lurcher may have been dumped for that reason. She is very shy. I am reluctant to ring the dog warden as they kill dogs after only 5 days. Of course, somebody else might ring the warden, but if this girl is around much longer I am tempted to take her home (to stay in the yard - can't let her near my house dogs with possibly infectious mange), take her to the veteranarian and try and get her into a no-kill rescue or a better prepared foster home. That is, supposing I can get her to come to me and get her on a lead without getting bitten in the process.
any advice?
