I have been asked to write a short article on the whippet for a local paper. (Wife correcting the Spanish) and cannot find the date of the latest Kennel Club standard in which size was modified. I believe the latest U.S. standard was 1989. Could some kind member supply me with the date. Thanking you, Regards, Stephen

No reply. Is that because nobody knows as "The Illustrated Standard of the Whippet "issued by "The Whippet Breed Council "bears no date? I assume I am looking at the last one as height is given as 47-51cms. ( 18.5-20ins for digs. I have a feeling that the last standard was issued in the late 1990´s. Regards, Stephen

Is size an issue???? 8) I have been looking at several winners of late. The size of these whippets from tallest down to more common is vast. It makes one think that size was not in the standard at all!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

As an example. If we take from the standard the feature of "soundness". If that was to stray from the standard as much as size, would we still see the same CC line-ups?

Stephen I think a new one is about to be published , thats why youve had no replies . :D

the British Whippet Standard that I have is in Bo Bengston's book (the 1st version - © 1985) and the date of the standard is 1945 with (current) written after it.

It states: "ideal height for dogs is 47cm (18 1/2 inches) and for bitches 44cm (17 1/2 ins) Judges should use their discretion and not unduly penalise an otherwise good specimen".

So the 20 inch tops for dogs has come in since 1985 when Bo wrote the book.

Does this help at all Stephen?

Go to the Kennel Club site http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/

The Standard on there is dated march 1994

But as others have said I believe it is to be changed soon so there is no date yet for the one where the size was modified.

Thank you all for your replies. According to the Kennel Club, as indicated by Wendy, the date is March 1994 and I believe that this revised standard set the present size. We have Bo Bengston´s book which was recommended to us by Ann Knight when we bought our first whippet in 1986 or there abouts. Also a signed copy of "THe English Whippet" by E.G. Walsh and Mary Lowe given to us by Ann Knight. An exceedingly good whippet book. Does a new standard indicate that height is to be changed again? Will we be producing small greyhounds? Catching up with the Americans. I believe the FCI standard for height slightly exceeds the KC. Must get hold of a copy. Thanks again, regards, Stephen

There were some very useful 'grammatical and illustrative' changes proposed. The size changes are either 1/2 inch or an inch in the bitches only. Dogs were uncchanged.

I don't have my proposal to hand and I'm not sure if/when it passed.

Wendy I have in front of me a copy of a page taken out of a whippet newsletter here in Oz. It is headed Proposped revisions to the Whippet Standard and it is dated 24th September 2000

It lists an proposed change to the height for bitches 17 1/2 - 19 ins. Dogs are unchanged at 18 1/2 - 20 ins.

Don't know if this helps.

The height change is right, but this revision wasn't as early as Sept 2000, it was actually earlier this year or late last year.
