Hi all, I thought some of you may be interested in an update on the lovely Dash :D He is settling in really well here in Oxfordshire and by chance a local dog trainer asked if she could hold her classes here on our farm so we have no way of getting out of it now ;) She does mainly agility which is fab because I said from the start I'd like to try agility to give his brain a workout as well as his legs lol. Anyway, we did our first session this week which was more of an obedience class but using some of the agility kit to give the exercises some purpose if you see what I mean, and Dash took to it like a duck to water - he particularly likes going through the tunnel (probably thinks he will find a giant rabbit in there  ) and his recall was perfect throughout :D :D i am so proud of him!

In fact he has been really easy to have around in general and will do a regular rabbit / squirrel / pheasant patrol round the farm every day but the best bit is he always comes back to check in with me every 10 minutes or so which means that even if he beggars off after a bunny I have the confidence that he will come back afterwards. (So far his tally is one pheasant and 2 rabbits - if he carries on like this I will switch to BARF and he can be self sufficient ;) )

Apart from one rather scary incident with my horse (he chased, she literally ran over the top of him, he came away with just a cut and hasn't been near them since!) he has been very good with the livestock and, get this, if he is charging towards the cattle I can shout "Steady" and he will drop back to a walk for me!!!!!! He also knows "Out of the field" when I'm about to turn the horses out and if I say "this way" and point he will change direction! On the other hand, he still looks pained when I ask him to "sit" or "lie down" and "Stay" is a complete mystery to him but, hey, you can't have everything straight away.

I'm hoping to get to the Charity Show at Enstone airfield on Sunday so I may see a few of you there?? Who knows, we may be brave enough to try some coursing.......

I'll be at Enstone with some of my gang so it will be wonderful to meet Dash in the fur!!! :D

His life sounds brilliant now and you must all be very happy!! Well done!

I wish mine would listen to me when the horses are around - unfortunately my 2 year old kicks first and asks questions afterwards so he has had to move to the farm down the lane

Dogs first, horses second

Lovely to read this update on the gorgeous Dashy

He sounds like he's really settled and is learning loads. I might send Emmy to you for a boot camp in recall....she turns the saluki 'deaf ear' until I send Roscoe to 'bring her back' :)) She's great in the house and garden, and in the dog park but when free running in the fields, although she doesn't run off, she doesn't come back to me straight away either.

As for 'stay'.... well mine will stay if I open a door and don't want them to go through it, but stay and watch me walk away any distance? No chance. The boys know 'sit' and do it automatically for treats and food but Em doesn't know that one yet - or else she DOES know it and thinks it's beneath her.

Jane, you will LOVE Dashy when you meet him and will see why Lal and I were besotted with him

Well done....its lovely to hear the stories about these dogs and how their lives are turned around by lovely folks like you...

Brilliant. Sounds like Dash is enjoying life to the full.

Thanks Jane :)) I've been quite surprised by how quickly he learns new things, he has brains to burn and has been so happy since doing the class. I'll keep an eye out for you on Sunday :))

Sharron when you come south to see us I'm sure Dash will conveniently forget all his training to impress Emmy and we won't see them for dust!

Sunday is shaping up to be a proper Scruples reunion ... me and my boys but more importantly young Jim, Jane, Anya and Dash, Tiffany ... anyone else??

Lovely to hear how well Dash has settled with you.

I tried mine at agility during the Summer. We got a few laughs and sniggers and rosettes for taking part :b

We will stick to lurecoursing :D

Whereabouts is Enstone?
It's near Chipping Norton. There's a post somewhere on here with a postcode or if you google enstone airfield you will find it.

I hope I'll recognise everyone - I'll spot the dogs first no doubt :p maybe we need Scruples badges or something???

I've only just spotted this!! Absolutely brilliant! Dash sounds as though he has the perfect life with you and is going from strength to strength and you have made it 'worthwhile' for him to return even if he's gone into hunting mode. I remember Rifle chasing one of our horses when he was younger, fortunately he emerged unscathed as he picked the one horse who cantered off then just turned, stared and gave him the 'Will you just b****r off, I want to eat the grass' look and he ran back to me!

:( I wish I lived nearer to Chipping Norton, it would have been great for us all to meet up :))

I think the 'this way' with hand signals is probably one of the most useful things I ever taught Rifle, he blatantly ignores 'Stay' but does 'Wait'..... don't ask me why :- As for 'sit'.....it's a very slow, sort of 'well if you insist' process whereas Rosie will drop to sit in an instant.

Have a great day at Enstone and give Dash a big well done hug from me :huggles:

Will do, thanks :))

eve - if we try lure coursing I think we'll be on the receiving end of the sniggers - I can just imagine Dash ignoring the lure and following a scent into the distance :b

vicky - I'll keep a look out for you. I'll have my big black-but-going-grey lurcher with me too

i'll be there aswell...please say hi if you spot me,just me and the two girls

doing the coursing with Bow and some showing classes with Lucy..the not so little black and white puppy

Well it was great to meet some of you lovely people today and your gorgeous dogs - not least the lovely Jim who looks so much like a mini Dash I couldn't help but fall for him

Dash tried out lure coursing for the first time and, I think, did pretty well for a first go and even came back to me afterwards :sweating: (I was SO worried about that bit in front of all you Scruplers that I nearly pulled him out) but sadly he did disgrace himself by cocking his leg on Annie  Sorry Annie, but you did get your revenge........after giving Dash the remains of your bacon buttie he threw up all over the back of the car on the way home :x

So pleased you had a good day and 'Well done' to Dash for showing off his recall  I spoke to Annie earlier and she told me all about Dash but has clearly forgotten his  minor 'indiscretion' as she didn't mention that, just how well Dash looked and how lovely it had been to meet you.

No more bacon sarnies when travelling..... :x
