We are planning for our whippeet pup - and have been advised that crates are a 'good thing', to help the pup feel safe in the home, to aid training and to help the dog to travel safely. Any views on this  - and if the concensus is that they are a 'good thing' - where on earth do you get a whippet sized crate which is not too heavy to lift? The ones available in Pet world etc only go up to 20" or so which is too small.

Our whippet will be a pet - but we will travel with her at weekends and holidays (in the UK). As we have alively househod I thought a quiet place of her own might be nice......but maybe the bed is enough.

Hi Lucy,

I think creates are a good idea for whippets...............mine love being in theirs...open or shut. And safe for all when in the car.

Argos do a good whippet size one at a reasonble price.

All the best with your new puppy,

Wendy. :D

Hiya Lucy,

as Judy says try croft engineering, that's where i got mine from they're very sturdy & also the cheapest i've seen.

The argos ones are a good size but they are just too flimzy for my liking!  I know people with the argos ones and they have had to reinforce the door brackets as they are not very hard wearing.

Thanks for the advice - and reasurance that I'm not putting my baby in a cage!

Hi Lucy

Crates are the best thing invented for dogs!  Ours love theirs, I leave it with the door open during the day, and it's always a fight to see who can get in and get the best space first.  It's a good idea to put a bed or something they're used to inside, and never put the pup in there as a punishment, then they regard it as a safe little den.  Our pups are shut in when I go out, it saves them damaging the house, but most of all it's safer for them - no chewing electric wires!  Have fun with your pup. :)

I always say I fought really hard against the idea of a crate when I got my whippet-mix puppy.  Took me about three months and a hole in the wall before I caved in.  Once I did I wished I had done it sooner.  She took to it amazingly and was just fine in it.

What swung us on the decision (aside from the possible bill from the landlord if she continued her chewing) was that the crate could go with us on holidays and no matter where we were she would always have a place that was 'hers' and she knew she was safe.

When we got our purebred pup she started in a crate as well and was just fine.  The older one was loose in the house, the puppy in a crate.  Now (the pup is almost 2) they are both loose, but either can and will be crated if we need to.

I used a crate for my two, which meant both they and the house were safe. They now sleep in the kitchen in baskets and have never chewed any part of it. Though they did sleep in the crate until they were about seven months. I also found they were quicker to house train. They loved the crate and often went in it for time out. :)

Apologies for digging this up! I am hoping that my first whippet will be coming to live with me in 2 weeks time. I am looking on the Croft website - can anyone advise me exactly which crate to buy and which size? Huge thanks in advance/

For one Whippet the 30" one will be fine (That's the size of one of the Alpine's). I have a 36" that my two fit very comfortably in. You need a metal one - a pup will be able to get out of a soft one. I'd choose the Showman (31") or the Alpine depending on your budget

Good luck with your new pup :luck: I think crates are great too.

Inca was in a crate up to being about 12 months old and she quite liked it, she went in on her own accord for naps and it helped no end with her toilet training, she has the run of the house now but will quite happily go in a crate now if necessary.

Dippy on the other hand hated every minute of being in the crate, it didn't do anything for her toilet training and she screamed her heart out from the second she went in it, she threw herself against the sides and worked herself up into a right frenzy. As soon as I let her sleep with Inca, she was fine and no mess in the house (toilet wise)...she is a chewer and I have to make everything dippyproof now when we go out but at least she's happier. I can honestly say if Dippy had to go in a crate now, she would be beside herself.

I think it depends on the dog but I'd say go for it

Useful crate tips....

It is a good idea to cover the section underneath the door in Cardboard as a puppy going in or out quickly can slide a paw under the bar below the door with awful consequences.

Also don't shut a puppy in a crate for longer than it can hold onto its bladder contents, or it will pee in the cage and then see it forever as a toilet spot. I use the crate to get them dry at night but not until they are about 4 months old.

Good Luck with your new puppy
