Hello All

Anyone got any recommendations for comfy whippet beds that don't cost the earth? Lily has grown out of her puppy bed but on scouting round at various pet places at the weekend, I couldn't believe how expensive some of the beds were and the still look flimsy/not particularly padded. When she is full grown I will let her sleep on the sofa but she is now 5 months and chewing everything so I need to still shut her in the kitchen at night. Any tips?

Thanks

I have bought several beds from here ...........

Very reasonable cost and quick delivery. The best ones IMO are the ones made from the very hardwearing car seat fabric - they keep their shape better  although it looks as though the only ones available in this type of material at the moment are the extra large ones

I bought the large round ones for my whippies - room to stretch out if they want to but cosy and warm because of the nice high sides and you can put any blanket or fleece in to make it even cosier :D

This is the sort I buy ......

This may sound a little silly but have a look at the cat beds. I have a double sized cat bed for Mae which she will not grow out of and it has the thickest cushion in it you have ever seen, I also have a dog bed for her but she rarely goes in it as the cat bed is much softer. (They can be a little cheaper as well  )

I have tried a variety of bed for my three.

The Anderson Bed - like an igloo, which they loved initially, but after a while they seemed to stop going in it, so that is now in the loft!!

Snuggle Beds - one I bought from Togs for Dogs which is gorgeous, and then I made a few too. The problem with snuggle beds is that Remmy couldn't get in on her own, and cried for help many times during the day :- , so now I just keep the lovely bought one in the caravan for holidays.

The beds they prefer are the traditional oval soft fluffy beds (mine are a make called YAP). I have purchased a couple from T K Maxx cheaper than in a pet store. I find over time the inner cushion gets chewed or goes lumpy, so I then make my own inner cushions using folded child duvets inside a soft removable cover (usually throws that I cut up).

I feel they seem to like beds with sides. Remmy also has to have a blanket to cover her too!! -_-

Over the years I have spent an absolute fortune on beds of all different types/sizes etc. and they have all worn out pretty quick and have mostly proved to be bad investments. At the beginning of this year I decided to try a simpler option and splashed out on 3 merino sheepskin rugs from a stall at one of the gamefairs. They are totally fab. The dogs absolutely adore them and they are even machine washable. I also bought the camp beds they sell to go with them. These have proved to be one of my best ever investments, stops the dog beds getting damp when we are camping or out for the day at shows as it keeps the bed off the floor. Here's a pic of Busta enjoying his sheepskin...

and on his campbed...[this shows the smallest fleece I have but they do full size ones which are big enough for my deerhound]

I can't find the website link just now but they sell online, however postage is quite a bit extra so I would pop to the next Living Heritage game fair and visit their stall.

Grace has a couple of these: http://www.pet-joy.com/ which I originally bought for my elderly collie to ease his old arthritic bones. They have lasted well and are very thick and soft. We prefer the fibre to the bean filling. Good tough covers which are pretty easy to remove for washing, and the inners will also wash if necessary (as it was when Taff became incontinent  ).

About a year ago someone posted on here and recommended an oval dog bed with sides and a cushion that sits in. It looked really comfortable and I bought one over the internet. I should have returned it because as soon as I felt the material (100% man made, slippey, nylon type stuff), I knew it was nasty. The dogs used it initially but the sides collapsed within a couple of weeks, the static from it was incredible with us all having electric shocks as soon as we touched the dogs and they became very sweaty in it. :nuke: The cushion became lumpy and uncomfortable. I cannot remember the name of the bed/manufacturer and I've looked back on posts but cannot find the original one and the bed does not have a label on it. It's royal blue with black paw prints. I now only buy either 100% cotton or a majority cotton mix cover. Incidentally, the best bed I have ever bought, which is still going (with a new cover), was a childs bean bag from a charity shop. It moulds to the dog and is so comfortable that when they're not using it, I do. :-

If it is only for a few months and puppy likes to chew, a folded up old single duvet works well. I am a bit of a scavenger and keen on recycling  , if I see an old armchair or suite out for collection, I nick the cushion covers and use those as washable covers for the single duvet :teehee: I use these as garden sofas.

In the house I have Cosipet beds from pet planet http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dep...amp;pf_id=53592

I find petplanet really reasonable for dog beds.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I'm looking through all the links now... sorry I haven't replied sooner - hectic few days! I'll let you know how I get on!

Love love love the pics of busta on his sheepskin and the highjacked bed - all beautifully colour co-ordinated!

I've been having a look at the sites your recommend and am now more confused (doesn't take much I assure you!).

Can anyone advise... what size would your recommend for 1 whippet... Is 28" big enough or would you go bigger? What size do you have??

Thanks! xx
