hello

we are hopefully collecting our 1st whippet pup soon (thanks to this forum) and i cannot resist some of the collars that have been shown as links on here!!

can anyone let me know what size i should be buying?

is it safe for them to wear a collar at 8 weeks?

i would like to have a collar and a tag on the pup as even though she obviously will not be out and about - she will be with me in her puppy crate at my shop. I think i will feel more secure knowing that she had a tag on

any ideas / advice?

thanks

Hi Tracey

A cat collar would be ok for the pup to wear at 8weeks to get it used to wearing one.

Like Dawn we use a stretchy cat collar when they're very young. We leave it on all the time. It's stretchy so can come off if they got caught, and the bell lets you know where they are. Some people believe in introducing a collar a bit at a time. I personally stick it on and leave it on. There's a bit of fussing and scratching off and on for the first day, but I personally feel they get used to it easier with it just put on and left.

Patience http://www.dogwalkers.net makes wonderful all-in-one collar/leads for puppies. I used them for walking Teya until she was about 6 months. If you check out the site it's the 1 inch martingale leads.

I usually put something around the pups necks when they are about 5-6 weeks old, they pull it off each other in no time at all, but get used to the idea of having collars. I use just a piece of stretchy material (lycra off cuts) but, dut as Wendy said; cat collar with bell is very useful!
