Hi all

A dog I bred here in Australia has moved to England with his owner. He is 7 yrs old - he has never raced. Would he be too old to learn? Please read my post under General Discussion Whippets - title "There's an Aslan whippet living in England"

Thanks,

Lana

Hi Lana

If he is fit, there's no reason why he shouldn't start racing. In pedigree racing where a dog needs a passport, he can only get his first one before he is 8 years old. At 7 he would run as a veteran, and if he hasn't raced before he could be at an advantage to the others, as they nearly all have suffered some kind of racing injury by that time in their lives. To get a passport his owner would have to become a member of a club, and the nearest to him could be the Northern Pedigree Whippet Racing Club at Chorley, or one of the Scottish clubs. There are details of the Scottish clubs on this site under clubs and societies. Mark Roberts would send them details of the Northern - we guess it would be about and hour to and hour and a halfs journey. Hope he has a go - veteran racing can be just as much fun as when they're young :D

Thanks so much June. I will let Mary know. :D

I have just read in the Northern Club info section that a dog has to have a kennel club pedigree to race. This could be a problem for Jack I think. I doubt that Mary would have got an export pedigree from our Canine Control Council like I have to do as a breeder when exporting a pup overseas. Jack was sold as a pet and would have travelled to England as such. She has his Australian Registration/Pedigree paper but they only put 3 generations on those. Obviously a five generation ped from me would not be official enough. Would her Aust reg/ped suffice with the Kennel Club or not? Would we have to apply to the Canine Control Council here for a 5 generation pedigree? Perhaps he would only be allowed to race with non-peds?

My other question is I think he is a neutered dog - does this prohibit him from racing?

Hi Lana

i've sent you a private e/mail with details of the club ect.

A 5 Generation from you would be fine (it doesn't have to be from the Kennel club or Aus equivelant)

It would need a UK Kennel Club Registration but that should be easy enough to get from the UK KC as it holds an Aussie equivelant? (i'll look into it with our governingbody as having never had this asked before i'm not 100% on the issue)

It being neutered wouldn't stop it from racing over here.

i've sent you my phone number so Mary can give me a ring and we can get her down for at least a few trials till we sort it all out.
