castration

vicky led me to this discussion, what do u think of castration? i have had two dogs done now one totally went backwards (the saint) and one is doing ok (boomtown rat) he is a late developer,  crazy cracker pups normally are  so what do you say?

I'm sure someone will soon reply, as i've said Neil none of my dogs have ever had the problem that yours have with the testicles not dropping properly, i know michelle & tony have bred a few that haven't dropped but i think there was only one that was operated on.  Tony will probably reply as he looked into it.

In general castration is probably a bad thing in racing dogs as the testicles produce testosterone which is an anabolic agent.

We had one of our dogs operated on as he was a monoorchid ( ie only one testicle palpable in his scrotum the other was undescended - retained in his abdomen )The undescended testicle was removed as our vet thought they sometimes shorten a dogs stride as they cause discomfort to the dog at full strech. The testicle was superficial in his case so the op was simple.

He did find a little  afterwards but not enough to make him open class.

Castration - the removal of both testicles prevents testosterone production but where only one testicle is removed the remaining testicle will compensate by increasing its hormone production.

Vicky, Joyce had a black dog and had two undescended testicle removed and the dog completely lost its form - can you remember its name?
